I had an Inspiron 2600 that took a dump on me. I think there was an industry knowledge that the motherboards went bed but no one ownes up to it. Anyway, onto my question. I slod all the viable parts to it. How can I get the info off the hard drive before I sell it, I have alot of important files there, of course. I am not buying another of the same computer. Is there a way otherwise than buying the same computer to do so? Thanks

what does this do?

Yeah, I was going to suggest the same thing. When I lost a computer to lightening I actually took the hard drives out and put them in enclosures like the one above. I then copied the files to another machine...
These external enclosures let you put the hard drive in an external USB device. Then you can just plug it into a functioning computer's USB port it will show up as another HD and you can move the files accordingly...

Great lifesaver...

I had this happen before when I worked in a computer store and what I did for a customer was get a little adapter from Fry's Electronic for $5 and that plugs directly into your lappy hd. Then you grab an IDE cable from inside your computer and just plug that into adapter and if you've only got one partition (C, you'll see the lappy drive as (E: or F, depending on how many cd-roms and stuff you have.

The adapter doesnt look like much but it works and it's cheap. Great for a one time thing. I'll link it if I can find it.

EDIT: Okay, here's a link to the adapter.

my question is, are these universal connections? I tried to put my dell HD in my gf's HP and it had different connectors. Will I be ok with this or the other unit?
Yes, all 2.5 drives have the same connector on it. The reason your Dell Hdd does not fit into your girls friend laptop is that Dell uses a removable adapter to plug into the hdd. If you look carefully you can remove this adapter with a small flat head screwdriver by prying up on each side very carefully until it comes off. You must be careful, you can bend or break the delicate pins.
