CompUSA has a Maxtor 3.5 inch drive (60 GB, 7200 RPM, 2 MB cache) on sale through 10/16 in the US for $29.99 USD. Regular price is $79.99.
I bought one to replace the 40GB 5400 RPM drive in an old desktop that I have. The drive swap was easy enough. I ghosted the desktop to another PC, swapped the 40 GB drive for the 60 GB drive, and then restored the ghost image to the desktop. I did not use the CD that Maxtor includes in the box.
My review....
- the drive is not quiet. It clicks and chatters like a drive that has no sound insulation. (note: a noisy drive does not mean that it is defective)
- the drive performance is good. There is a noticable I/O improvement over the 5400 RPM drive.
- I wish it had an 8MB cache though.
conclusion:
This 60GB 7200 RPM drive is a good value to give new life to an older system for very little money.
