GeForce 4 440 Go?

Well, it's quiet over at AT, so I'll ask here:

I've been looking at the Compaq R3000Z. The biggest card it lets you spec it out to is the "64MB NVIDIA(R) GeForce(TM) 4 440". Here's the info:

The NVIDIA(R) GeForce(TM) 4 440 GO discrete graphics processor with 64MB dedicated video memory features the latest NDIVIA nForce(TM) 3 Go150 media and communications processor (MCP). This graphics solution ensures compatibility with the latest games and applications, and powers the ultimate gameplay with blazing performance, crisp video and graphics display, and state-of-the-art features. NVIDIA and GeForce are registered trademarks of NVIDIA Corp.

Is this GeForce a piece of junk? I've had GeForces in my desktops in the past, and while they're solid, they're not exactly peak performers.

No a bad chip but not a fast one by today's standard. it would really depends on what you use your laptop for. Heavy FPS (doom3, HL2, etc) may be problematic without having to turn off a lot of details and lowering the res.

Well, it'd be nice to play HL2 on it, but it's not a necessity. I do a lot of 2D/3D work, however. I'd like to get a desktop replacement within the next year. Here are the specs I'd like:

Drives:
DVDr (dual-layer if possible)
3.5" Floppy (optional, but I want it if possible)
Card reader with CompactFlash and SecureDigital slots
Hard drive - doesn't matter, as I want to replace it with a 60gb 7200rpm 2.5" Hitachi hard drive

Ports:
VGA out (DVI if possible)
multiple USB 2.0
at least one Firewire port
56k modem
10/100 ethernet (gigabit would be cool too!)
54g wireless (108mbps would be better, or if it can be upgraded internally)
Bluetooth

Screen:
15.4" widescreen (Compaq's 15.4" WXGA BrightView Widescreen [1280x800] looks like a good option)

System stuff:
Athlon 64 (3700+ with 1mb cache would be ideal)
ram - doesn't matter, as long as I can upgrade to 2 gigs of ddr (333 okay, 400 better)
vram - 128mb minimum, 256 would be ideal
Windows XP Pro (I'll reinstall and Ghost it with my stuff anyway)

Not too much to ask for eh The Compaq R3000Z, with customizations, nearly fits the bill. Screen is important because I want to use it for watching DVD movies, as well as working in 2D (Adobe CS suite) and 3D (Rhino, 3DS, etc).

The drawbacks of the R3000Z is (1) no CompactFlash slot, and (2) 64mb gf4 video card. That really stinks. It's sad that such a great system has a such a cheesy video card. I'm willing to pay the extra money to get it; are there any systems that have similar specs?

The other laptop I was looking at was the eMachines m6811. However, I wasn't very impressed with the brightness of the screen (the m68xx series looked noticeably dimmer than the other laptops on display at Best Buy) and it also only has 64mb vram, albiet with a radeon 9600 instead of a gf4.

i think i had a desktop version of the geforce 4 440 and doom3 didnt run too well on it with low settings.... got a average fps of 15 ... which wasnt very nice....

My laptop has a geforce 4 460 go and i think it runs games like far cry decently and not too well... its manageable as long as u can do without the aa and af,etc

Avoid the 440, i had it on my old Dell Inspiron 8200 and its slow, slow as ****E!
The 9000 is better if your laptop supports it, but go for the 9700pro if you can, you'll see the huge differance in gaming and general 3d usage
