Fujitsu 171 (LifeBook S6000) - Any good?/Recommendation

I'm looking for a notebook computer since my Compaq 2800T ain't so good anymore. Battery only last 15 minutes max... and DVD drive needs to be replace, as told by the manufacturer.

I went to Fry's Electronic today and saw something I thought would be good. Here's the spec:

Fujitsu 171 (LifeBook S6000)
Intel® Pentium® M Processor 1.60 GHz
Microsoft® Windows® XP Home
13.3" Crystal View XGA display
512 MB (256 MB x 2) DDR333 SDRAM memory
40 GB hard drive
Modular DVD/CD-RW combo drive
Integrated multinational 56 K V.90 modem and 10/100 Base-Tx Ethernet
Integrated Intel® PRO/Wireless 2200BG (802.11b/g)
Price: $1500 (Source: Outpost.com)

I like the features especially that it's less than 5lbs, but the screen seems too tiny. But if this is a good model, then I may consider - but I need feedbacks first.

I also went to a Dell kiosk at a local mall - I was looking at the Dell Inspiron 600m - feels too heavy. I also read some reviews that the 600m isn't good either.

I'm a traveler on plane, and I watch DVD a lot. So here's what I am looking for if at all possible...

Celeron vs Centrino (which one's better?)
1.6 GhZ or higher
14 or 15" screen
Windows XP Professional (if possible)
256 MB or higher memory
30 GB or higher hard drive
Modular DVD/CD-RW combo drive
Integrated Wireless LAN
6.5 lbs or less (includes drive and battery)
3 hours or higher battery life
Integrated 56K & LAN, USB, Firewire (if possible)
Budget: $1600.00

This is what I will be doing...

Internet browsing
Emails
MP3 & DVD playing
Adobe Photoshop 7
Office applications (outlook, word, excel, powerpoint)
2004 Studio MX (dreamweaver, flash, etc.)* depends if I can fit in the HD
Little Programming (Java, C++, Visual Basic)* depends if I can fit in the HD

I hear that the IBM T42 is most popular. I also was considering Averatec 3200 Series but not sure if it's good or where to buy. The Averatec 6200 Series is totally a dream toy for me - I'd buy in a heartbeat but I need something light and reliable.

Other consideration: Toshiba S306, Centrino - $1200.00 after rebate from Fry's Electronic.

What's your thought on Tablet PC? Any recommendation?

I am avoiding buying things off the internet - I want to feel and harass the notebook before taking it home. And please don't consider Apple like the iBook - I ain't got the love for them Apples, but I like the Apples on a female

Thanks for your help!

Fujitsu Notebooks

I've only been around for a few months here but it seems this crowd favors notebooks for gamers so notebooks that have very strong graphics capabilities is what gets the attention.

Subnotebooks like Fujitsu (Lifebook P and S series) and Panasonic (R3, Y2, T2, etc.) with integrated graphics chips usually don't garner that much attention. That's too bad because for the power business user (who doesn't play too many games) these notebooks are the cream of the crop.

The S6000 series you mentioned, (actually the newest version is the S6020D if I'm not mistaken) is a very good notebook for the price. If you can live with the integrated graphics card (fine for most people who don't game) and don't mind the 13.3" screen (fine for most purposes except maybe video editing) this notebook is exceptional. At it's price point and weight, I don't see any other notebook that is comparable.

Good luck!!

Hey Appleseed,

I myself own a fujitsu N5010. It's been nothing short of wonderful. And Fujitsu's CrystView, IMHO, is definitely one of the best, if not THE best, laptop screens on the market.

My coworker just got the S6210, and has let me use it for the past week since i'm conteplating getting one. After seeing the unit in person, all i can say is that the size/weight is PERFECT. (And, of course, the screen too) I'll be ordering mine soon. One place i definitely recommend is portable one/laptops inc. (www.laptopsinc.com) Ivan over there was extremely helpful in the purchase of my N5010, and if memory serves me correct, i think they're offering a free upgrade from a 1yr to 3yr international warranty on the S6210. They can also customize a unit any way you want since they're an authorized fujitsu dealer.

Like CJ3209 said, the Fujitsu S series is definitely one of the best out there, as long as you don't mind the integrated graphics. Over the past week, i've used mine to run statistical software, GIS stuff, office, etc., and it's performed GREAT. (The unit has 1GB RAM, 1.6P M, CD-RW/DVD, and 40GB 5400RPM HD) When comparing the S6210 to my older inspiron 600m, the fujitsu definitely outshines the dell in terms of looks, performance, and build quality. I've shown the S6210 to 3 family friends, and they're all going to be ordering their own

Hope this helps with your decision.

Cool... Thanks guys...

Now it seems that the S6010 are quite popular in notebook forums - are there any retail stores that I can see physically? Is it the same look and feel like the S6000? It seems the only difference (S6000 vs S6010) is that the S6010 has a DVD burner and 60 GB is that right?

HI Appleseed,

I'm not really sure what you mean by the S6000 v 6010. As far as i know, the current models are the 6210 or the 6220. Only real difference between the two is that the 6220 comes with a 1.7 dothan, as opposed to the 1.6 banias the 6210 comes with. Both the 6220 and 6210 come with the option of having fujitsu's Superdrive.

The older line wa the 6100 series, but if you like the Crystal View screen, you're outta luck since the CV only comes with the 6200 series.

The only problem with fujitsu is that they aren't as "out there" as dell, HP, or Toshiba, whose products you can check out at any electronics store like circuit city or best buy. I honestly think that's the reason many people don't know about fujitsu's great reputation and more importantly, quality.

I know Fry's carries fujitsus, but i guess you already know that since you mentioned that you dropped by there in your first post.

I noticed you mentioned that you might be worried about the smaller screen. I just read an article over on cnet asia, saying that fujitsus releasing a bunch of new laptops in late november. Not sure if you can wait, but one of them is a S7011, an update to the current S7010. That series comes with a 14.1" screen. The current 7010 does NOT come with crystal view, but i'm not sure if the upcoming 7011 does.

FYI: here's a great review (with pics) of a S6210
http://www.notebookreview.com/result...feBook%20S6000

HOpe this helps.

PS. there's a fujitsu forum over at notebookreview, and most of the threas are on the S6210/6220 series.

Thanks for your response. I was actually referring the S6000 to S6210 (S6010 was a typo)

Anyway, yeah, you mentioned that Fujitsu aren't "out there" like HP, Compaq, Toshiba, etc. I visited Sam's Club, Circuit City, BestBuy, Staples, OfficeDepot all in one day - there's no Fujitsu in sight except Fry's.

I was worried about smaller screens since I do a lot of programmings and Web page design. But I guess the bigger the screen is, the heavy the notebook gets so that's a tad bit frustrating to me.

I post the same thread/questions to Anandtech, NotebookReview, and LeoG.net - they're all forums. This forum here seems to have more post than the others.

Thanks for your guidance.

Could somebody tell me which one is good? Banias vs Dothan ? Just that the 1.7GhZ carries Dothan but I wanna know if Banias (1.5GhZ) is good too. Any difference in terms of performance? Faster vs slower?
Dothan is basically the improved version of Banias - faster and more power efficient. Banias is also a very good laptop cpu especially when it is much cheaper now that Dothan has taken over. If the difference in price between the 1.5 Banias and 1.7 Dothan is significant - 300, or even more - you might wanna consider the Banias.

So if I'm doing Photoshop 7, Studio MX (Dreamweaver & Flash), C language programming... is 1.5GhZ good enough or should I go faster?
