The new "Sony Viao S270" notebook (not yet reviewed)

Hi guys as you can see im new at the forum, so what i want to talk about is the new sony viao s270 that just came out on sonystyle.com, i've done very a lot of research to get the best of the best and i finally consider the viao s series as the winner for portability, performance and style... i actually dont have much at this time to say since i have not get my new s270 but i will as soon as possible... so here's what i can say for now:

-this babe rocks i have many confirmations from sony technicians that this new model "s270" does not have a noise fan and over heat botton parts as the last old models.

-it also comes cheaper than any other lower model, its said that is for competitive price purposes, to be more specific the s170 s150 s260 and s270 can be customized with same configurations and guess what the new s270 beats all prices believe me, go check it out by yourself (kind of crazy but good for us)

-this new s series model comes with some new tech. its said that comes with a special auto sensor display for periphalps and etc. (i dont know much)

-THE MAINLY PART OF MY SEMI REVIEW IS TO GIVE YOU GUYS SOME RECOMMENDATIOS WHEN GETTING A SONY VIAO OR CHOOSING ANY LAPTOP:

the first thing is to get a way to know what you get, want and need, so go to sonystyle.com and get the system you plan to get by customizing it or not, then remember this options and DO THE TRICK sony doesnt want you to do, call the Sony Educational Sales Department and get a 6% (for now) discount on anything you buy without any trouble or questionare, of course a guy will help you set up the order using your planned custom options for your viao, note that you only get the discounts by placing order on the phone with them.... the reason i call this as a trick is because no one at sonystyle or sony sales phone number will give you ANY type of information about this Edu. Discounts, its like they try to hide this, they even lied to me a couple of times (i had the phone already so i was testing those rats) saying that there is now such thing, that sony does not do discount for educational purposes, that they had no idea of what i was taking about and etc... i admit that is hard to get this people at the Educational sales to help you right away, so left a message and wait for your turn to be called...

so i think the way used to buy my new upcoming viao is helpful and saves some good bucks at least the sales taxsation.

wanna know what im getting for $2250 including shipping and tax (instead of paying more than $2550)?

best display avalaible for the s270 (13.3WXGA xbrite / 9700 video card/64 mb)
centrino 735 1.7a ghz 2mb L2 cache
512 mb of ram
60 gb of hard drive/4200 rpm
dvd rw and cd rw multi drive/2x
wireless LAN with bluetooth tech.
windows xp pro. sp2
and all other standard features at no extra cost.

i know there are many other s170 pre configured system just like mine for less money but the sacrifice is needed for a modern model wouldnt you agree (and not to mention all the new fixes).

so this is it guys i will post pictures and reviews of this new s series model as soon as i can, i hope i can help others choosing the right laptop, PM/email me.

PS:did you guys tought i woudnt give up the Educational Sales Deparment Phone Number? lol...
here it is: 877-600-9368 (option 4 and then 1)

***i recommend when buying from Edu. Sales just to mention you want this laptop if you get the Edu. discount, and all information THEY ask you for, do not provide information that they are not asking you for, you might mess everything up, so shut up and follow them up (besides your custom plans), "i didnt even have to tell them about my school or student id or such, so in other words even a non studying person can get this great discount, lie!!!"

Very exciting stuff. I read on another forum from another user that the S260 is whisper quiet. That's about the only thing holding me back. I had originally eliminated the Vaio due to the noise. Leaving it to the 700M or Apple 12" PB.

Greatly looking forward to your review, make sure you get some good pics!

*EDIT: Gotta stop posting at 4am.. I barely make sense.

You price seems a little low to me with the DVD RW included, but it looks good.

$1830 (educational discount + $200 off coupon)

S170
1.7 ghz
9700
Kingston 1 Gig RAM
Hitachi 60 gig 7200 RPM drive

I live in Sweden and have a VAIO S2XP on order. I and can't imaging that the new european S2 series wouldn't have this fan fix.

I am a silent-pc nerd and hang at silenpcreview.com and I have gotten the SPCR-bug so, basically I won't settle until my computer is dead silent..

Anyhoo.. I ordered a S2XP a couple of days ago and have read about the S170(All the ~1000 post in the big VAIO S thread) and the ONLY thing negative I have found about it is the fan! Actually I'd like 4:3 format with 1400x1050 resolution over the 1280x800 widescreen resolution but that's not a biggie..

Just wanted to say that this is the best news I could get! Thanks for that and I am waiting for the loooooong and thorough review with lots and lots of juicy pictures(notebook porn! )!

EDIT: And remember to vote in my poll!

Oh no, I've only received the S170. The coupon offer has expired, so I won't be getting another coupon on the S270 order. But I did get one for the S170 and used it on the S270.

According to my talk with customer service, they expect it at the end of the month. According to my order status it says ship date is on the 21st. And according to my experience I expect it to ship about 4 - 5 days after the 21st.

I got the faster HD and the Gig of Ram. 4200 RPM is just crazy slow definitely need the 7200. If you use this as your main system, you may want to wait until an 80 or 100 gig 7200 RPM version comes out, probly later this year. I plan to build a desktop soon and get some real hard drive space, so 60 is enough for me. I'm only going to have 2 - 3 games at any given time, a linux partition for some war driving ..heh and nothing else. So 60 is fine.

I'm used to having a lot of ram in my notebooks, so I can't remember how big of a difference it is. But I think changing users, loading windows, and a lot of other things improve with that much RAM.

Also, I may or may not upgrade the processor at some point. If its cheap enough a year or so from now, I'll get the 2.1 Ghz or the highest clock speed the motherboard can handle. I don't think that will buy me anything, I don't multitask that much.

I'm also trying to get a nice sleeve. I'd really like to get a shinza, and they said they would have one for widescreen notebooks this month, so I'm waiting...

Oh yeah I need a good optical mouse to. I'd like to get a mini mouse, but a lot of people say its too uncofortable... I'm patient for now, and will just wait a bit...

Oh I almost forgot, I need a good cleaning solution, my figerprints are all over thing so fast.

Of course it would be nice if I could get a 19" LCD and connect this to it at home. But I need to recover from my expenses this year!

Not much more else you can do to this baby. Just hope something smaller and with a much better GPU doesn't come out in the next couple of years.

I guess if you like a light notebook at 4.2 lbs this is THE ONE but it seems like a step back with the smaller screen size I mean.

well, the S170 I bought its for my girlfriend, but she didn't even want it to play games, so its pretty much mine, but she uses it. So for her, the fan noise makes no difference.

Right now I'm used to a Dell notebook fan noise, so I found the noise on the VAIO quite confortable. I also have an old linux machine running 24/7 with a p2 200 MMX. Therefore, until I get a new desktop, no amount of noise from any notebook would be noticeable for me.

I was however happy that there was no clicking noises from the hard drive. Although I used the Sony hard drive for all of five minutes.

I am very happy that the S270 will be coming with a quieter fan. I didn't know about until after I ordered it, so its like a bonus gift. Although, I hope its more powerful than the fan in the S170, since its gets pretty hot when playing games. But again, I'm used to the fiery heat of my Dell, so anything would be better.

Also, I'm used to 1024x768 resolution and never thought having a bigger resolution on a laptop would make a difference. But I found the S170's resolution to be quite nice. Somehow I associate big resolution with small icons, but it doesn't seem that way on the S270. I'm not blind or anything, and I believe a cluttered desktop reveals a cluttered mind, so I never needed to shrink my icons to fit them all.

Some1 posts every other second I'm trying to post :P

Anyways, the smaller screen size is a trade off. In any case, I don't know how well a 15" screen would fit in my book bag. And I don't know how durable a 15" inch screen that was so little would be. It might even look weird because the hardware part of the laptop would be smaller than the LCD, unless you can make super skinny parts.

But I have always believed that if you want a bigger screen, you shouldn't settle for 15". Really, go out and get an 20" LCD and then we are talkin about nice. And that would not be anything you could travel with, so you would buy it and then connect it to your laptop when you get home. I do understand that a lot of people need to commute to school and want a powerful laptop. I don't know what to tell you, but when your not a student anymore, the most important thing for a laptop should be portability. And a big screen will never be very portable, because it is BIG. I think the term desktop replacement laptop is an oxy moron. Laptops are intended for a different purpose, not to act like desktops.

my .02 cents

What are the differences between the S170 and the S270? When I configured both to have the specs I want, the S270 comes out over $300 more than the identically configured S170.

15" on a laptop makes the whole laptop to big for my taste. What I had in mind was a 14,1" screen with 1400x1050 resolution like you can have on the Dell D600. A VAIO S hardware notebook(M11 64 or 128mb) with that 14,1" screen would pretty much be my numero #1 dream but the S2XP has almost just that and it's little to no trade-down IMO!

I just got the Sony 170B and it is very quiet. Everyone complains about it being noisy. The only time its moderately loud is when playing games. Otherwise it is never on.

Plus the xbrite screen is so amazing

Yes it does. I ran into a price mistake on their website like that just the other day. I can't reproduce it though. I'm guessing some web browsers don't work too well with their site.

For those who don't want to configure, the S260 is at Amazon for $1849.99 after rebate. Since it's free shipping and no tax for most people, it's a good price.

Also, SonyStyle is clearancing out older model 150's (I think they are 150's) for $1499.99.

Check out the news here:

S260?

Hello Everyone,

I have a S150 that I really like alot except for the noisy fan that drives me nuts. I can't seem to get anyone at Sony that is aware of what I'm talking about. So, I was really glad to see this thread.

Many of you mentioned that the S270 is supposed to be quieter, but do any of you know whether or not the S260 is quieter as well? I'd really appreciate the info. Thanks.

Regards,
Richard
