Wanted a Sager but got Dell XPS instead. why?

I have been an avid fan of sager and this forum for a while and was waiting for the right model to come by so that I could buy it. 3790 was it but was going to wait for couple of months to see if it would come out with an AMD processor instead.
And then yesterday going through techbargains.com I came across this bargain:

Gamers Inspiron XPS Notebook $1586

Cheapest its been. Inspiron XPS Gamers Notebook 9lb P4-3.4Ghz with HT Tech, 15.4in WUXGA Screen, 512MB DDR Memory/Free 80GB, 128MB ATI Mobility Radeon 9700 Graphics, Free 8x DVD burner, XP Home $2449 - 25% off coupon:
V2R?BFDZR4W60D - $250 rebate = $1586 shipped free.

I worked on the configuration and bought a system and then decided to cancel it but the sell sales guy persuaded me not to cancel it by giving me another $90 coupon. Here is what I ordered for $1627 shipped

What do you guys think of this deal..? I am not really a gamer but would like to try playing a few games. I know its heavy but I did not want to sacrifice performance and I have heard that XPS has a great UXGA screen.

First I have to say WOW! That is a heck of a deal. Second i'd have to say why? My thoughts is, Dell is starting to clear these out to make way for their new rumoured 17inch PCIE notebooks that people have said would be out next month or before Christmas. Still at that price you can't go wrong. And since your not really a gamer, you still have the option of buying the 256 MR9800 card later down the line if you need more power. If nothing else test drive it..you have 21 days to send it back. Good luck to you..

A mercedes isn't the same as a hyundai.

Yeah, it's a very cheap price. Last month, I ordered a inspiron 8600 that was loaded. 2.0 ghz with 1 gig of ram and all the other goodies (windows pro, bluetooth,8x dual layer burner, extra battery, wuxga) . After a 20% discount and a 150 mail in rebate, the total came out to be around $1700.

I used it for 3 days and returned it. Why? The parts that dell uses are all made in maylasia or china. In the past, all the parts they used were made in taiwan.
If you understand about technology, you would know that taiwan and japan makes very high quality components.

After I returned the dell, i went ahead and bought a 3970. The quality of the notebook itself is completely different.

ugly...

That is a loaded machine for a great price but Dell has questionable build quality and it's definitely not as sexy as a Sager.

There is nothing wrong with trying it out for 21 days. If you don't like it, then return it.

First of all this is an XPS and that too with 3.4Ghz. I am going to give it a try and see how it goes. For $1600 even if I use it for couple of years, not bad. Who knows whats going to be out in 2 years. I can turn around and sell it on ebay for at least $1000 in a years time. I like sagers and their build quality, but the fact is Sager caters to the gaming community and I am not a gamer so even if I buy an high-end machine, its going to be a waste on me. I am a programmer and usually just do programming and surfing on my computer. I do plan to install a database server on my maching for development but I think XPS should be quite capable of handling it.

The dell xps is catered to gamers though. I think i would put my money into my desktop. More ram, maybe a new gpu in the future, and a bigger hard drive.

True, the XPS is a gamers machine but I could not get the same sager configuration for this price. Also note that this comes with an XPS backpack, a bigger 16 cell secondary battery and an 8X dual layer DVD burner.

Have you looked at all of sager's options. Not all there laptops are discussed on here. Check out the 4380.

I looked at it and it is 400Mhz fsb and no option for UXGA screen. and more expensive comparatively then and dell XPS I got.
True, but you get what you pay for in a sager.

Then again, there are Sager option with what you mention, the 5690. I personally prefer the UXGA on my 5690, as opposed to the one on the iXPS that I sent back in order to get the 5690.

Not that I am in anyway being critical of your decision, but just my personal preference for the 5690. The price was about the same, actually, at the time I bought mine, I saved about $1000 over the iXPS I sent back.

I did see a 40% coupon in the dell section because I was looking for a coupon for my family, you might want to take a look.

I really don't recommend having a database server on a laptop. It's not very robust. I work for adp and we buy servers all the time. IMO ibm is the king in that field. I've never heard of anyone installing a database server. You should be looking at suns or unix.

i cant believe someone would order an XPS and not get the radeon 9800...you realize it's one of the only laptops with that card...and that it's a nice improvement over the 9700 right?

if you arent going to get the 9800 in your XPS, you are throwing your money away...and you will be biting your tongue hard when the PCI express comes out....the 9800 will even be better than the first pci express laptops (if they start with x600)

Nope. Even if it weren't coming out with the card it is (which I can't name directly, although you may be able to find a topic where someone violated the NDA that hasn't been deleted yet), it would almost certainly come out with either a GeForce 6600 or a Radeon x700. Either one should be able to overpower a Radeon 9800.

By the way I forgot to mention that the laptop is coming with the Plasma snapon covers and they are sending me free skullz snapon cover. When I realized that I forgot to select the skullz option, I called Dell and now they are sending it to me free.

The database server I am going to be installing is a pc based database not as big as Oracle but less powerful than the MS SQL server.

I would have got the 9800 but it would be a waste on me, as I am not a die hard gamer and it was extra $250.

The system has not shipped yet but has been built already and is in the boxing stage. Can anyone pursuade me to cancel it? I just want to make sure that I can live with it for the next 2 to 3 years.
