I run MS SQL Server and Oracle on my laptops. Have been doing it for years. Everyone at my company does it, too. Works great.

Hmm... Really? ;)

I run two named instances of MS SQL Server 2000 (Developer Edition) on my laptop... along with Visual Studio.NET, IIS, and a boatload of other tech stuff. Got a gig of RAM, older CPU (old P4-M), and twin Hitachi 7k60 drives. It actually works very well, even for relatively heavy work... Yes, it will never beat a RAIDed database server, but a power laptop is a totally realistic option for a developer/systems architect who needs to be mobile and capable of demoing multi-tier solutions on the spot.

I'm actually trying to decide between a 4750, 8790, and 9860 right now (if the 9860 ever comes out... Been checking these forums daily, that 9/15 date on Adam's post just won't budge!) The one thing holding me back from the 4750 is only one hard drive (OK, two things: no dual-channel RAM...).

I'm glad he went with a Dell. Next time around, he might get a Sager... same story here. I don't have any problems with the build quality of my Dell and haven't had any reliability issues. Not every Dell is a piece of crap; those I must admit sometimes it is a risk.

Sounds like a heckuva deal. Also sounds like it should work great for what you want it for. Good catch!

For ev'one else, there's also deals to be found at fatwallet.com and the Hot Deals section in the Anandtech forums. Great way to lose your money. I quit going

Don't cancel it just yet phxlibra. Try it out and see how it goes. It's all about personal preference and you won't know if you dig it or not, until you try. Go for it.

I think I will give it a try and see how it goes. It is a good deal considering all the stuff I am getting. It is getting kind of funny to a fault. I called the dell guys today asked if I could upgrade to Win XP Pro from home edition, they gave me another $50 coupon. I was kind of irritated that I had to be on hold for 20 minutes, I guess the gal could feel my irritation and gave me the coupon.
Wondering how to use the coupon now.

If Ii upgrade to an XP pro from home edition, do I need to install different drivers?

That would pretty much be covered and completed as part of the upgrade. The main differences involve networking capabilities

edit 1 - actually, assuming you are talking about a new computer, I would just reformat and reinstall from scratch, it is usually a good idea on a new computer. The driver that come with it will be fine, but I would recommend download the more current ones anyways

so in other words the drivers for xp home and xp pro for various components are same, eg. video drivers, sound etc.

Pretty much, the ones that may change will be on the XP Pro disk, but video, sound and such will remain the same. Really, they are the same OS, pro just adds some more networking capability.

Update

Got my XPS yesterday. I have to say that it is a pretty big laptop but I was not wow'ed by the XPS. I already have some gripes with it and currently waiting for an exchange unit to come in.
First problem, the DVD drive would not open with a CD in it.
Second> The left button for the track point is very moody and if your thumb is on the right most edge, it does not work most of the time. You need to press the button in the middle.

Both of these are show stoppers. I called help, had to wait for 30 mins, they fixed my DVD problem and wanted to try and see if I would overcome my problem with the left button.
This morning I decided that I could not deal with it and called customer service. I told them I had a bad experience and wanted to return it. They asked me if I could try an exchange and see if it would alleviate the problems I was facing. I said I would if they upgraded the system to the 9800 ATI card. He said..no problem. Now I am getting a new unit as an exchange and a separate shipment of the 9800 card, which I need to call tech help for installation.

What do u guys think.? should I still keep it, give it a try. Now I have a spare 9700 card. Anyone looking to buy one? How much can I get for it as I have no idea. The screen of the dell is very good and so is the sound.
Will post pictures once I decide to keep the new unit.

I was having second thoughts, thinking do I need such a heavy laptop, I just need performance and need it to last me 3 years.

I'd wait for the replacement...I'm not getting the XPS 'cause it seemed too big but then I'm interested in the 17" screens so I don't know how rational that is. It really depends on how "mobile" you are and on how comfortable you are with the notebook. For the price you got it, with a 9800 card, that's a kick ass machine. Just run Doom3 or something on it and maybe you'll be happy again...

anyway, I'd try the replacement. If you're still not happy with it you can always return it, right? They only want you to try an exchange...

I ended up getting a Dell 700m with their $750 off any $1500 or over deal from techbargains...paid $800 for it shipped. I'm a happy guy though I have no idea what I'm going to do with a 3rd laptop, maybe for the car?

You may want to ask this on the dell side of the forum, as the card from the xps is not compatible with the Sager laptops.

I doubt you will be able to get much if you can sell it, as the 9700 was the lowest card used in the xps and all of the xps models still under warranty as the minimal warranty is 1 year and they only came out in April. Someone with a 8600 may buy it, but again, I'm not certain it is the same card design used in the 8600.
