Gateway 7405GX: The new Emachine 6805

Thread Starter
Just got my hands on an interesting little gem.

Went to BestBuy today to return my 6805, due to cracked hinges and keyboard malfuncitoning, and picked up the Gateway 7405GX.

This lappie is the spitting image of the 6805. The specs are just about the same and it even has the same casing as the 6805, except for the Gateway logos and the all silver top. There are a few differences though....

This notebook has an 8x DVD+-RW, 80GB hardrive and what looks to me like the newer style screens that HP and Sony have been using (the ones with the glossy plastic, i can't recall the name).

I can't seem to find this lappie on Gateway or BestBuy's website but I can tell you right now that it's in my hands.

I'm not sure of the retail price of this baby (since I'm an employee at BB) but Im pretty sure the employee price was ~$100 less than the employee price of the 6805

I don't know the exact employee price because they had to price adjust the price up to match the 6805 price, so that I don't difference back (crappy BestBuy policy) and the reciept doesn't reflect the original price.

Overall I'm very happy and I thought some of you might be interested in this new model.

Yeah I heard about this on my way out of work today... I was going to post about it myself if I could find the model name (because I didn't find that out)

And as he says they have the UltraBrite (sp?) screens.

I just got this notebook today, and I'm installing xp pro on it now. It has the identicle specs as the emachines m6811. It comes with windows xp home sp2. This is what is listed on the side of the box:
7405GX Notebook
AMD Athlon 64 processor 3200+
Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition
Integrated ATI Radeo 9600 (64 MB discrete RAM)
15.4 Ultrabright WXGA widescreen display
802.11g Wireless LAN
512 MB DDR SO-DIMM memory
80 GB hard drive
Digital Memory Card Reader
(compactflash, secure digital (sd), memory stick, memory stich pro, multimedia card)
8x DVD +/- RW drive
1 firewire, 4 usb ports
10/100 Mbps built in eithernet
Preinstalled software: MS works 8.0, Money 2004, Nero 6 suite, Picture it, Power dvd, aol with 3 months membership, Norton AV 2004 with 90 subscription.

I just popped my recovery DVD (not 3 seperate cd's this time) into my desktop puter. There is a folder on the dvd named *\Bundle\, and in that folder are the installation files for money, nero, norton, pictureit, poweredvd, and works. I am able to install all of those programs onto the computer (my desktop). Although I am not going to try it out, it looks as if the DVD could install MS xp home onto any computer.

There is also a drivers folder, and it contains the following drivers:

Audio: Realtek Semiconductor Corp. AC'97 Sound System Software <<< For Win2000/WinME/WinXP (WDM driver)/Win98 Gold(First Edition)/Win98SE >>>

Chipset: Hyperion 4 in 1 drivers (version 4.48v)

CPU: amdk8, in the inf file it states the version to be 10/16/2003, 1.1.0.0

Lan: VIA Rhine Family Fast Ethernet Adapter, v3.18, apr 2003, and it has drivers for several operating systems along with a flash utility to flash the lan cards EEPROM. Driver is for VT8231/VT8233/VT8235/VT8237

Digital Media Reader: just a setup file and a infcache.1 file in that folder. Product version listed when you right click and choose proberties on the setup file is 1.02

modem: conexant version 2.1.6.0 dated 9/22/2003

Touchpad: Synaptics Touchpad Driver for win2k/xp version 7.10.4

USB: driver for win2k and xp. there is a txt note in with the xp folder that says xp sp1 has driver allready included for usb2.0

Video: has driver version 6.14.10.1002 from ATI. Dated on 5/15/2004.

Wireless: Broadcom 802.11g driver, windows 98se to windows xp, (STILL NO 64 BIT!!!!!) version 3.40.64.0

I am assuming that it has the same motherboard as the emachines m68xx computers. xp pro is about done setting up, as soon as I get a reboot, I will check the bios version/date.

EDITED I had the wrong motherboard url in here, thought that I would remove that link
http://www.e4allinc.info/ has a lot of information on emachines in general, definataly worth a look.

in the system bios, it states my bios version is 52.00.01, kbc version is k52.33.08 .

It has a fujitsu mht2080at hard drive, and from what i can tell, it has a LGE GWA 4080n dvd burner.

Still is a really bare bios setup utility, maybe that will one day change

hope this answers any questions people may have on this laptop! If someone can find the exact model of the motherboard, that would be great! I am pretty sure it is the Arima W730-k8.

Those specs are not identical to the m6811, but close. At first glance, I notice the slower processor (m6811 has 3400+) and faster DVD burner (m6811 has 4x). Also, the m68xx (and likely yours) is W730-K8.

The w720-k7 is for Athlon XP-m processors.

Also just check out that site. Although resourceful, there are several inaccuracies related to the m68xx series. He has it listed as a w720-k8 in stead of w730-k8 (to my knowledge a w720-k8 doesn't exist). He has listed as there being only one memory slot, with a maximum installable memory amount of 1280MB. In reality, there are 2 that will each hold 1024MB. He has the 3400+ in the m6811 listed as 2.0GHz when it is actually 2.2GHz.

Vip keeps us a nice database of BIOSes at http://www.rmecc.com/~v2/em/index.html

It will be interesting to find out if your BIOS will work on the m68xx series. I hope it will since gateway seems to actually support their product.

Thank you for pointing that out! I edited my post so I did not have a link to the wrong bios for those that find something and don't read on.

It seems I'm not the first to mistake the 720 730 thing on the motherboard model. Arima's site lists it as a 730. If you do a google search for arima 720-k8 and then arima 730-k8, they bring up people talking about the motherboards in the m68xx's. Arima's site calls it a 730, so that's what I will go with

I am almost positive that this new gateway uses the same motherboard as the 68xx's do. Sandra reports my usb/firewire controllers to be arima computer co vt82xxxxx, says i have a via tech inc. vt8235 pci to isa bridge, and a via apollo k8htb cpu to pci bridge.

I guess the outpost ram that some of us got would probably work just as well in this new laptop.. I have a 6811 and it I trade it in for the 7405 due to my cracked hinges... I dunno, I dont see this laptop as much of an upgrade other than the faster dvd writer (and you take a small hit on the processor speed...)

Man I would sure like a link to this notebook. I am very surprised that it was introduced with 0 fanfare/announcement/link on Gateway's website. Where would we see this in Canada?
It is the same motherboard.
Excelent ... hopefully the BIOS won't be locked strictly to the Gateway machines. I hate flashing a BIOS for the first time after hacking it up lol.
If anyone can tell me how to get a copy of my bios off of this machine, i could make it available. Sandra lists the bios date as 09/17/2004. I have not ran into any problems with xp sp2 as of yet, and a lot of the problems with amd64 and sp 2 are from DEP (see the article on the MS web site, http://www.microsoft.com/technet/pro.../sp2mempr.mspx
while the ideas with DEP are great, it's something that definately needs some work from all involved, amd, microsoft, and software developers.
But, back to the bios. If anyone would like me to, and can point me to a page that gives instructions on how to back up my bios on this machine, I would be more then happy to make that available to anyone who would want to take a chance and try it out I have not tried booting to a knoppix cd yet, that is something I'm going to try out here in the next week or so.

Does this new rig actually have an "integrated" ATI 9600?!? Integrated graphics would hamper this machine.
No, the ATI Mobility Radeon 9600 has 64 MB of dedicated memory, and can be easily overclocked...not that I support that....

I think that by integrated they mean that the graphix card is integrated, not the RAM, which they have listed as discrete. From what I have read about the m68xx (you can look in the photos of the laptops in a different part of this forum) the graphix card can be replaced. I have read about how people have overclocked the graphix cards on their emachines a great deal, and you can with the omega drivers, which I do have installed on my 32 bit installation of xp (right now doing a dual boot, one xp pro, the other xp pro x64 beta build 1218).

You CANNOT remove the video cards from the 68XX series
unless you want to replace your MOBO, but you are right...the card is integrated into the Mobo...

Sorry about that

was speaking of the EMac M6811 btw

I was talking about the pic in this thread...
http://notebookforums.com/showthread.php?t=45227
it was not of an emachines, in the post right before the one with the pic, it does say the gpu is not able to be removed.
