My T21

I just ordered my Thinkpad T21 from ebay with the following specs:
Pentium III 800mhz SpeedStep Processor
256mb of Ram
20gb HDD
DVD ROM
14.1in XGA

I was wondering if there was anything i needed to know before i installed Windows XP Professional with XP2. I got all of the drivers from IBM.

I had that laptop, it could probably benefit from more RAM or you can just turn down some settings in XP.

i got the same machine but with 128 mb of ram. Not much in performance, but it does the job. Also, can u check to see what mode your hdd is running. Mine was running in DMA Mode-2. Have fun with the system, its pretty well build.

All of the T2X series laptops run in DMA Mode 2 as far as i know.

Upping your RAM would be good. Even an additional 128 MB would help tremendously. Be careful though, the T20, T21, and T22 use the 440BX chipset and are notoriously picky about RAM. While you generally can use PC133 RAM in a computer that takes PC100, you can't in these machines. PC133-rated RAM WILL NOT function in these laptops. (I learned this lesson quite expensively...) Same with PC100-labeled sticks that are actually re-marked PC133s. Your best bet is probably Crucial, but pure PC100 SODIMMs are expensive these days since no one makes them anymore.

fair price & good find.

XP should run perfectly fine for normal office use.

If you plan on any multi-tasking, then get another 256mb of ram (likely 133mhz sdram)

fwiw overstock has some 1.13 t23's similarly specced for $600 i built up a t20 with a faster hdd ram and proc.. for anyone loking for a well built machine that still runs perfectly fast the overstock.com deal is a good one. they are factory reconditioned.. i'd buy one. The one question i have is what is the screen resolution.

I belive that it is either 1024X768 or 1 higher.

The T21s can either have 1400x1050 or 1024x768 resolutions. The T23's are probably the same, but im not positive.
