3dMark competition!!

Thread Starter
Hi all! I notice that a lot of people really like tweaking and measuring their laptops using the 3dMark benchmarking programs, and of course comparing it to other peoples scores.

As such, I have added a 3dMark performance competition to section 8 of the DELL Inspiron XPS/ 9100 FAQ. There are three categories, the 3dMark01, 03 and 05 tests. Within each there is a sub-section for each card used in the XPS/ 9100 (ie: 64MB & 128MB MR9700, 256MB MR9800), and further sub-section for original and overclocked scores.

So, what do you need to do? Simply run the benchmark you like, and if you think your score is in contention post here your score, your system configuration and some proof (ie: screenshot or some such), and don't forget to mention if overclocked at what speeds you are running! Alternatively you can PM your results to me.

We need the specs as follows (with this example):

Inspiron XPS

CPU: Pentium 4 3.2GHz (Prescott)
Memory: 1GB
Hard Drive: 40GB, 4200rpm
Graphics Card: 128MB MR9700

Please feel free to offer any other suggestions or feedback you may have here or in the FAQ and I'll get back to you. So please, lets start benchmarking so I can post up those scores!

Cheers, and good luck,

stu

Overclocking is of course optional

Look at my sig, I don't have screenshots of them becuase i didn't think of that when I ran it. I will try to get it back up to those scores and let you know, and of course take pics.

Oh goodie. Yet another 'whose is biggest' contest. In my opinion, the 3dmark benchmark is kind of silly. I mean, what does this thing tell me? That the next generation games kick my cards butt better then David Beckham? Do a game test instead if you can, it's much more useful. ;0) Even still, it's still just a.....er.... "you know what" contest. ;0)

What does this thing tell you, it tells you different drivers impact your performance, it tells you if your system is running on par with other similar systems, it tells you if tweaks you've made have improved performance.

For example ComputerGeek up there pulled about a 3,600 in 3DMark 03 with the exact same specifications that I have, while I was able to pull a 4,000.

Why did I get a better score by more than four hundred points and what can he do to get the same score, I can see which drivers I used and what overclocked settings I was using.

It's not the most useful tool in the world but it certainly has it's uses...

EDIT: I got 4,000 @ 500/300, and 4,200 @ 530/315

I did not thoroughly test 530/315, I simply saw that someone else had gotten up there so after 500/300 I tried it and benchmarked it, however I did not test it further.

did you heat mod your card at all?
No my system is totally stock. What you have to keep in mind is that the core on the 9700 is built to run at 500mhz so it is capable of running at that speed and technically is not overclocked. I am not sure why Dell decided to clock it at the speed they did but the cooling in the 9100 is quite sufficient.

I would be more cautious about the memory speed because I do not know for sure what type of memory it is and what it is spec'd to run at, however I was able to run at those settings 500/300 with no problems.

Inspiron 9100
Pentium 4 3.2ghz
RAM 1gig
60gb hd 7,200 rpm
ATI Radeon 9800 256 with 2.5 Omega Drivers
3dMark03 6,338

Thanks

Oh and i was wondering if leaving the omega drivers installed just for everyday use that wont mess my lappy up will it cuz i know it makes it work harder. and how do i cheack the temp of my comp to make sure i dont kill it.

Inspiron 9100
CPU: Pentium 4 2.8GHz (Prescott)
Memory: 512MB
Hard Drive: 40GB, 5400rpm
Graphics Card: 256MB MR9800

3dMark2001 - 18039
3dMark2003 - don't have it installed
3dMark2005 - 3344

p4 2.8 @ 2.94 (210 FSB) using CPUFSB
Radeon 9800 256 @ 466 (core)/ 375(memory)

GPU hits 70, cpu 62

Plan on backing off core/memory to 400/340 for day to day use.

What about Go5200 cards in some 8600s? Do we get a place in the FAQ?

We can't run 3DMark05; but, 3DMark03 and 01 work well.

5190 on the Dell XPS (Desktop) ...all that matters is it runs about 23 installed games without a hitch...so im glad...

Do I have to have a certain number of posts to attach images or do you just upload them to a seperate site usually??

anywho... these are my specs:
Inspiron 9100
CPU: Pentium 4 3.2GHz (Prescott)
Memory: 1GB
Hard Drive: 60GB, 7,200 RPM
Graphics Card: 256MB MR9800

3dmark03: 8,005
3dmark05: 3,334

These were too long ago for me to remember my clock speeds, but I never push it too far... I also have screenshots of both as soon as I find somewhere to upload them

Participants also should claim they use mentioned overclocking in real games, shouldn't they? I mean one thing is to run 5 minute long test and another is play at least 1 hour in Doom3 or FarCry. So, I propose that a system should be quite stable with the overclocking to participate in the contest. Otherwise it will not reflect any reality. Some people will freeze their notebook in fridge and then run 1 test with unreal oc.
Screenshots will proove nothing, it could be taken on a desktop. We could collect links to Futumark's ORB - that's harder to fake.
Let's not take this too seriously, there isn't any prize so it doesn't matter if you win anyhow. I think this is more useful as a 3DMark results and discussion thread, otherwise we all know only people with the Mobility 9800 are in the running, so the rest of us might as well leave.....

Having said that my overclocked settings of 500/300 were thoroughly tested and are very stable...

He said that there are different catagories one for the 64MB 9700, 128MB 9700 and 256MB 9800, so no matter what card you have post the scores here to compare
post #19 of 178
here is the link to compare for my 3DMark03 score:

and here is the link for my 3DMark01SE score:
http://service.futuremark.com/compare?2k1=8121895

will be clocking higher to see if I can get better scores
