ACER TravelMate 8006LMi vs Sony VAIO S1XP

Can anyone help me!?!?!?

I'm just about to buy a new notebook but can' quite make up my mind between an ACER TravelMate 8006LMi and a Sony VAIO S1XP!!!

The ACER has the better spec and is certainly cheaper than the Sony, BUT, I've read several reviews in this forum on the ACER and the thing which is worrying me is the common complaint about the screen quality with bad viewing angle.

I'm on the move a lot with my work and use my current notebook continuously in various locations, often in brightly lit airport terminals.

I've seem the Sony X-brite screens and they really are cut above the rest. My dilema is do I opt for the lower spec (and more expensive) Sony purely because of the screen or does the additional functionality of the ACER make it the best bet.

I'd really appreciate any comments.

I install ACER's daily and the only ones with a bad viewing angle are the ones based on the compal CL51 like the 292Lmi series, otherwise the viewing angle is great.

On the other hand, you can't compare the Sony's screen to any other laptop, Sony simply has the best screens overall.

If I was to choose I would get the Acer, no need for a nice screen if no apps/games will run on it as you like.

1.specs
2.battery
3.screen
4.looks

That's the way I look today at a notebook to make my descision (also the reason why my Ferrari is going out, I realise I need battery above all)

Thanks for the quick feedback.

Nice to hear from someone who has experience with ACER as I've never used them.

My current laptop is an old Sony VAIO but I think I'll take the plunge and try the ACER TravelMate 8006LMi.

Good luck with the sale of your notebook.

Thx.

What you'll notice with the Acer compared to the Sony is that the colours don't look that good, they look at bit washed out but you don't notice it after a while.

I do notice it because I have a Sony SDM-71R TFT screen connected to the notebook, but again, there is nothing better then Sony for the screen, no discussion about that.

Thanks Uriel...I did actually read your review and downloaded the photos which you took....very helpful stuff.

I wish I had never seen the Sony X-Brite screen on a friend's notebook as I know that whatever I buy is going to be a disappointment on the screen side of things.

I'm also a little miffed as the supplier I'm going to use (I'm stuck with them as I'm buying the notebook through work) will not swap the 2 X 256MB RAM modules for a 512MB to allow me to purchase a second 512MB and upgrade to 1GB!!!! That would mean buying 2 X 512MB modules (at great expense) and then being left with two useless 256MB modules - GREAT SERVICE

All in all I still think the ACER seems like a lot of notebook for the money so I think I'll still go ahead with the purchase.

Thanks again for the info.

You are are falling for the biggest deception in the world. Sony have been doing this for years on the TV side and I guess it also happens on the monitor side be it CRT or LCD. Sony cheats. They do not use the same standard color pallete that everyone else use for calibration. They use a slightly more virbrant one as their base color so their TV always looks more lively/saturated/virbrant than their competitors. In layman's terms, it's known as Cartoon Color. It's one of the oldest trick in the TV book. Hard to believe someone is still falling for it.

And that is bad? Why doesn't the other ones do that then?
