Installing Diablo II on i9100 - CD Drive Problem

Okay, now that I have my Targus backpack and my bamboo green quicksnap cover and we are working on the heat issues with Dell Technical Support via email instead of spending hours on the phone with India reps... I have a question... and I hope you guys can help me or direct me to where I need to go.

When I try and install Diablo II on my i9100 (WinXP Home), the installation utility runs fine, then it prompts me to put in the Play Disc... and that's when my CD drive won't open. I try pushing the button on the drive, nothing happens... the LED doesn't light up and the thing won't open. I even tried running the Media Center and telling it to Eject through that... nothing happened. So... I have to restart the system and, of course, the installation never completes and I can't play the game.

Any idea what is wrong? I have tried to install it since Dell replaced all my internal components and it did the same thing... but this time I restored back to a prior date and then ran NAV to make sure nothing was screwed up because of it. I really want to play that game... and from the posts that I read, everyone does on this system... so I don't know what the problem is.

P.S. I thought maybe this partial/faulty install is what made my system crash the last time... any thoughts on that?

Same thing happened to me a few times, where the CD drive wouldn't open and I'd have to either restart, or actually pull it out, and put it back in. It always worked after I actually took the unit out and put it back in...but it was annoying. I read somewhere that it might have been caused by Sonic RecordNow...so I uninstalled it and installed Nero instead. I haven't had the problem since...so that might have been the problem. Do you have RecordNow installed? Hope this helps a bit...

I have not had this problem at all, and I have successfully installed Diablo II on my notebook at least twice. I believe if you hit FN+F10 (might be another F key, just check the little blue icon), it will force the drive to eject. See if that works.

LiriAnna,
Have you ever heard of the "paperclip" trick? If you look at the cd drive there is a tiny hole. Unbend a paperclip and insert it in the hole. Push gently but with enough force to unlatch the cd drive tray. Switch out your cds and you should be fine. This will not effect the cd drive in any way so not to worry. I too have had problems with my cd drive not wanting to open. It does not happen often, and seems to be totally random.

US East HCL here

I occasionally play SC on battle.net. I tried Diablo II online but it almost spoiled the game for me with all the modded items.

::grins:: Well, I don't play ANYWHERE yet... but will be soon, thanks to you guys!!!

It would be cool if I could hook up with others, though... so let me know if anyone's interested in me tagging along!

The more the merrier in my group. You may not want to jump into HCL if you are just starting but if you play on East I may have some SC stuff packed away to help you out. I have a gillion accounts but the only two I really play on now are (edit: I'll PM you) if you want to track me down.

So now I got it installed... got the CD drive to open (on its own a couple times, and a couple times I had to do the paper clip thing) and now I am constantly getting an error that say:

Diablo II Server Exception

UNHANDLED EXCEPTION:
ACCESS_VIOLATION (c0000005)

I have tried uninstalling, reinstalling, rebooting... I don't have SP2 installed so I went in and made sure that I didn't have a firewall installed, turned off the NAV Internet Security thing.. maybe the version of the game is just too old to run on my system. The copyright date on the CD is 2000... so... perhaps I should just give up and buy a new one if I really HAVE to play this game??

I have seen that error in Blizzards Tech Support kbase. I believe you have to download and install the latest patch, and that this was a problem for the initial release of the game.
