using DScaler does make for better picture quality TV in the 8886, but...

...you can't capture video (at least I don't know how to) and you can't use the remote. I finally got the program up and running so I wanted to let everyone know what I thought. You can get DScaler here:

http://deinterlace.sourceforge.net/downloads.htm

Like I said, the picture quality is noticeably better. I didn't really expect the difference to be as pronounced, but I tried it anyway. Glad I did. Not using the remote is kinda lame, but being able to flip through the channels w/ the wheel on my mouse is the flippers dream; never flipped so fast in my life! If anyone can figure out how to capture w/ this program, let me know.

On a side note: anyone tried this program:

www.replicantdvd.com

Says you can copy DVDs to CD-Rs, albeit w/ some loss in picture quality. Sounds reasonable to me...

Don't fall for that crap lol, go to doom9.org/doom9.net or vcdhelp.com and do it all for free.

As far as the dvd thing, you can either convert the dvd movie from mpeg2 to mpeg4 (which is known commonly as divx). This will allow you to fit it on a cd with the same quality as dvd... BUT, you cannot play it anywhere except on a pc with the divx codec installed. Most movies traded on the net are in this format. It is a .avi interleave that can only be played by a divx-compatable player (realone and media player 9 both have the capability if you download the codec). But, if you want to put dvds on vcd or svcd and be able to play them on a player, you should get dup-dvd. It works quite well and takes 2 cd-rs for vcd and 3 for svcd for the average movie.

how good is svcd compared to divx?? I hear that svcd is better than divx but i have seem some REELY nice movies in divx and they look almost exactly like a dvd... tho I didn't have the dvd and divx side by side but it still looked reely good

and about how long does it take to turn a dvd into a divx and svcd?

i rip my own dvds ... my desktop can do them as they are playing :-), my old p3 733 took about 10 hours though, i can easily compress a full length movie to a reasonably high quality single cd (looks find on a tv, you can notice it about 3 feet away from a computer monitor) , or 2 very high quality cds (quality comprable to a dvd .... you can notice the compression every now & then) (with divx).

however, you can rip movies using mpg2 (dvds are mpg2), to several cds, and some dvd players can actually play them ... kind of like how some dvd players can read mp3 cds ...

On my old 750 mhz desktop it would take me about 8 hours per pass (i believe) for converting to divx. About the quality between svcd and divx, id take divx over svcd anyday. Also if you own a dreamcast, check out dcemulation.com, you can download a free divx player and a lot of other neat things. If you have an xbox and get a modchip theres also a media player that allows you to play divx quite well. Ive also heard rumors of a stand alone dvd player that will play divx (probably divx 4.x or 5.x since 3.11 would land them in legal trouble). I haven't been into the divx "scene" lately so i couldnt really tell you whats new or not. anyway hope i helped ya.

Which tuner card are you suppose to select for the 8886 in the setup options? Didn't know which one the Sager uses.
I was going to ask that then I grabbed the 4.0.1 test version and it listed the tuner at phillips NTSC
I'll try that out on the 3.x version. Curiously 4.x doesn't recognize the video card, since there's no items in the drop down I'm thinking it may still be under development.

You'll want to pick up Girder also for the remote then get the conversion tools (misc) to convert the dscaler remote to 3.1 then to 3.2.

SVCD is 640x480 whereas DVD is NTSC and is 720x480... otherwise, the quality (besides encoding errors and the like) is identical in all of the SVCDs I've made. I love Divx except you can't play it anywhere but a computer... which is why an svideo out is so important on a lappy, lol. I have many movies in divx on one cd each and they are, for all intents and purposes, dvd quality. They're excellent :-)
