5660 Cooling improvement :D

Thread Starter
I have upgraded using the hybrid BIOS (many thanks Henrik! ) to a 3.06 GHz HT CPU.... HOWEVER... I have been having a few cooling issues, especially when gaming........

The CPU would hit 78C -at that temp the CPU throttelling would kick in and FPS in the current game would drop VERY considerably -liek to single figures

Even using max fan it would climb to about 74-76 - a bit hot for my liking tbh...........

The Solution?!?!? The cover over the heatsink that hs the two intake vents for the CPU fans have some nasty mesh inside, located under the aluminium liner. These are restricting airflow a LOT..............

I removed a few lugs of plastic and lifted the Aluminium lining so that I could pull the mesh out with a pair of pliers, the ali would sit back fine afterwards, so no problems with distortion there....

Afterwards, running same games with maxfan would result in a CPU temp of just 67!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

IE..... a 10% drop in CPU temp :O

I know of one other 5660 user with a 3GHz CPU has done this with similar results...... anyone else willing to give it a try?!?!?!

Cheers...

Aye, I am that said other user, we discussed ways of improving the 5600's cooling since we upgraded to 3.06 HT

The idea came from an IRC chat, so there and then we whipped off the cpu bay covers and removed the offending meshes. The improved airflow to the fans caused the significant temperature drop

I am currently looking at further modifications to the cpu bay cover and also a small air chiller to feed the cpu fans, possibly based on a desktop cpu cooling fan and an aluminium duct, aluminium being a good heatsoak.
The principle here would be to chill the air by passing it through the aluminium duct before it reaches the fan inlets. It might sound extreme, but you should witness the extreme heat from a P4 3.06 and Radeon M9000 working flat out

One thing that would help is a different temperature ramp for the cpu fans.
Mine currently cool the cpu down to about 44C then cut off, only restarting at 50C or more. This is causing the temperature to cycle over 6 to 10 degrees. I would rather have the fans on low speed than have them cycling over this kind of range
Perhaps Henrik has some ideas on this or maybe there is another fan control utility in the piepline ...

We lurk here and reside in #FMTH@QuakeNet on IRC, so if you have any inspiration post here or drop in and let us know
