New Qosmio G15-AV501-Awesome!!!

This machine is awesome. The brightness on the screen is the best i've seen. If only it was sxga or uxga, then it would be perfect. It is also really quiet which was one of my main criteria. I tried a sager 4750 before, but the thing idled at 68C and the fans sounded like jets in my quiet environment, so i returned it.

Does anyone know how do make Media Center XP 2005 do non-linear scaling so i can fill the screen while watching TV? The machine does it if I use the Qosmio player (while not booted up), but I can't get it to do it in MCE.

I just got the machine and haven't tried all the features yet, but it seems to fit my bill. I had a scare when i was watching a dvd, lots of pixelation and stutter. However, i figured out it was some scam dvd of really cheap quality. Other dvds look great.

Playing Call of Duty on it without a hitch, but I am no expert on benchmarks or gaming specs.

Is the HDD really a 5400 rpm? I only know the 100 GB model to spin at 4200 rpm.

Yes, the cool thing about this laptop is that it uses two 5400rpm hard drives, one 60gb and one 40gb. I'm typing on it right now and it is damn fast, the keyboard is awesome, the sound is awesome. It's really a great machine.

yeah i have one it's crazy... i'm in love with it... too bad battery life is shot (about 1hr 50mins) but i can always get another battery pack =)

I don't know, I talked to a tech guy at one of the major retailers and he said that the thing is really a waste of money, although I most certainly would not buy one of the older 15 inch models, I heard that they had some significant design flaws in them, but I never heard any specifics

Can you comment on these "design flaws"? I've noticed you've posted several negative post re: Qosmio, but have yet to quote your sources or detial the issues. If they are the opinions of tech guys from "major retailers", I'd consider that info as useful as tits on a bull. They are consistiently clueless with regards to the products they offer.

I finally bought a Qosmio after considering the likes of IBM (I've had several ThinkPads and they rock), HP and Sony. The Qosmio had the best feature set of the bunch. Toshiba is also one of the last true OEMs. that is, they build what they sell. They have a LONG history of producing some great notebooks. The Qosmio is no exception.

The G15 can be had for less than $2500 online. Considering the quality of the display and inclusion on MCE 2005, it's kind of a no-brainer.

I looked over one of these things last night @ CompUSA and the screen was flat out the best I've ever seen on a notebook. Every review I've seen has been positive. I know that the common wisdom is you don't tote a 17 inch notebook around but if I buy one, I am going to, comfort be damned. That said, maybe G15 owners could help me out with a few questions.
1. Windows Media Center. Is this OS XP Pro with media capabilities built in? This is important as any lappy I buy is work/ play.
2. Does Toshiba make a docking station for it?
3. Having never before considered a Toshiba, what is the build quality over the long term?

Yeah, MCE is essentially just XP Pro with the extra media stuff. Just installed it on one of my desktop machines and it is like XP Pro but with a slightly different look (a glass sort of thing). Pretty neat. I can't wait to install on my 8600 so that it works properly. I currently have it installed on a PII 400Mhz.

Actually that is NOT correct. XP Media Center Edition is based on PRO and not HOME (all three versions that have been out - 2002, 2004 and the new 2005)

The thing is, they did change something in 2005 that leads to this confusion - in version 2005 they took *away* the ability to add the computer to a domain (like Home does), however the code is all still there, it just doesn't let you do it once its installed. You can however add the machine to a domain if you do so during the inital install of 2005, or if it is done as an upgrade to a previous verison of MCE.

1 - Does anyone know who the ODM is for the Qosmio units? The P25/P35 ones are Compal made while the Tecra and other Satellite-Pro's are still being made by Toshiba.

2 - How do you *say* "Qosmio"????

I checked out a $2,900.00 Qosmio at BB yestertday for about 20 minutes.
I must admidt the screen is very very bright and can also do a red green blue 1 1 1 black on a 0 0 0 black backround which most notebooks or desktop LCD screens cannot do. I'd guess the contrast ratio of these new screens at greater then 400:1 like the Sony A190/A290 series.

I thought I read somewhere that Toshiba builds the Qosmios? I peeked at the label on mine and it clearly states "Made in Japan". I don't think there are any other large notebook ODMs left in Japan. They're mostly located in Taiwan and Korea.

Sidenote: Doesn't IBM still have ThinkPad assembly in Japan?

Thats good to hear (the "made in Japan" part) - Toshiba *is* one of the few laptop folks who still make some of their own, but they don't make ALL of theirs - in particular I know all the P25/P35 models were Compals.
