what i'm going to do first...

still waiting for mine...

was thinking what i'm going to do first with the new laptop....

0.25) make sure everything works

0.5) logon to notebookforums.com and post !!!!

1) mess with Alienguise (that skin thing), probably end up uninstalling it, i just dont trust skinning apps, take up resources, etc...

2) mess with windows settings, turn off the xp firewall, install my own..etc..

3) repartition:, 15 gb to c:\ for windows and support crew, 20 gb to 2ndary partition for games and applets (messengers and whatnot), leftover to 3rd for media (grafx and mp3's) [total 60gb minus the few gb typically not available]....before you all say anything, yes i know repartitioning requires reformatting...but not with Partition Magic...if i can find it in my disc collection

4) possibly benchmark it, never been one to particularly care about benchmarks, but it would be interesting to see how it compares to my base desktop system (which i'm not going to reveal to avoid a speculation thread spin-off )

5) install stuff....

Just curious, how easy is it to use partition magic? Also, why would you want to partition your hard drive?? Isn't it pretty much having 3 C: drives? Just curious.

partitioning with partition magic is way easy to do and partitioning is an easy way to organize everything.

that pretty much says it
and it doesn't make 3 c: drives, it makes (in my case), a c:, d:, and e: drive.
heck, my desktop system has 5 partitions (200 gb drive), so including my dvd burner and external hdd, i have a c: (windows), d: (apps), e: (games), f: (misc), g: (media), h: (dvd burner), and i: (the external, backup for media)...but i digress, dont wanna turn this into a thread about partitioning (make a new thread if necessary, and not in 'alienware phases')

and i like keeping windows and its page file on a drive seperate from everything else, makes it perform better.

it also makes maintenance a bit quicker, as when i clean and/or defrag a drive, it wont have to do the whole 60 gb. same effect for spyware and virus checking. just face it, partitioning large drives has so much more going for it than people realize. (and i do recommend using partition magic, or some other similar tool, NOT fdisk, esp if you've never partitioned before)

ack, i did it again, back to what i'm gonna do with the notebook when it gets here...

software to be installed...
  • firewall, 99% probable it will be Zone Alarm. (at home, notebook will be behind router, but not when i'm out'n'about in the hotspots)
  • AVG antivirus
  • Spybot Search and Destroy
  • Network Stumbler (before you ask, its a utility that scans for any wi-fi broadcasts in the area, wether they broadcast their id's or not, and give info on them, like signal strength, what kind of security its using, if any, etc...)
  • Messenger(s): (MSN messenger 6.2 if its not already on and Yahoo messenger)
  • the Games.. (City of Heroes, Star Wars Galaxies, Diablo 3, UT2k4)
