I think it is safe to say that this year we have several games coming out that are going to revolutionize the way games are. Doom 3 was said to be one of them, but if you believe that you have another thing coming. Did it raise the bar for horror games? YES. Did it change the way we look at games for the rest of our lives NO. Least not for me.
Games that have done this, Doom, Half Life, and Halo all come to mind. Doom brought around gaming in FPS to the forfront of gaming today, made it popular and basically fathered alot of games into this world. Half-life changed the way we looked at them. Brought a more complicated mix to it with more puzzles then just find the key. I don't know how many times I tried to find the best way around a trip mine of some sort. The fact that I had to learn how to get around characters instead of charging and firing at them, and also that you didn't need hundreds of enemies to kill, that a few in a room could create just as much havoc if you didn't take your time and becareful. Halo, one of my personal favorites. If it wasn't for halo, I think xbox wouldn't have made it as far as it did. It tested the abilities of graphics and intelligence in many ways. Not puzzle wise really, but tactics. Face it, beating the game on legendary isn't easy. It teaches you to survey if possible, and then find the best method. Take out the elites first, because the are the biggest threat, and that a group of grunts was a great grenade oppurtunity. I also love the vehicle combat. I felt badass the first time I took a scorpion through attack for the control room. The multiplayer vehicles was a big plus. It also was the firs to bring a sense of realism to a scifi type game, the ability to only carry two weapons plus grenades of 8 total. The melee attack is very powerful, but only kills if you manage to crack them in the back...so on. If you've played, you know. And of course, we can't forget the endless nights someo f us have played deathmatches, capture of the flag...lan parties...OI. Every single one of them has changed them gaming industry in their own way.
Like I said though, Doom 3 had its shot and it was obvious that they didn't intend it to change anything. They intended it to be a horror game that gave you a flash back (and nightmares) to the days of old. A decade old game brought to bare in a different life. Simple, and fun. Least in my thoughts. So, we have Halo 2 and Half-Life 2 both releasing in les then 30 days now. I know everyone has their pre-orders in for their taste of time waste, but which one do you really think is going to hit that spot, going to change the way look at gaming? Both did it for me, I didn't find too many games great after half-life. Not until a few years later. I'll be honest about this too, I bought an xbox souly for Halo. I didn't care about any other games until rainbow six 3/black arrow, then I became a XBOX live freak and wouldn't stay off of it till I long time ago...
Anyway, It is a sure thing, it seems, that one of the two (or both) will change gaming. Maybe a little, I think alot, but what do you all think? From what I've read so far about half-life 2, they are delving into a deep story, probably 20 some hours of play if you putz with it. Great graphics, awesome gameplay and somet attention to detail. Halo 2 is offering much of the same and also picking up on a story line that intrigued many, and caused a book series to come out. They were good by the way, easy to read but good. Bring across alot of new vehicles, areas to play in and vast enviroments and they seem to be an even match? What will pull them through? Tell your thoughts. Either way I'm getting both!!!
