proposed setup

Thread Starter
just thought id post my proposed setup and get some comments.

interface:
m-audio duo - its USB (bah) but it has two mic preamps, two ins, and two outs. stand alone A/D convertor as well. gets good reviews and cat beat the price on ebay.

midi controller:
edirol pcr-50 - 49key k-board. its also USB (not so bah) and can double as a control surface. it has 8 faders and a crapload of knobs and whatnot.

ill prolly use reason or protools6.1 or i dunno. ive been using sonar i think and i like that alright. its on the other comp and i never remember the name. any suggestions on better gear in the same general price range are appreciated. i almost bought a hammerfall...i just had to keep reminding myself that im not starting a pro studio (yet).

I am using Sonar 2.0xl with an MAudio Duo and I had it working a while ago on my 8887. Everythign ran very well, as expected. I recently tried getting the Duo to work after reinstalling XP and had a little trouble, but I didn't try to hard. The Duo is really a great peice of hardware but it seems to struggle a bit when it comes to drivers. Go for it though, it's pretty good.

wisefish...are you saying that you had driver issues with XP? i plan on using xp pro and i dont want to have driver headaches. thanks for the advice.
Yeah I had it running perfectly on xp pro for a while then after I reinstalled my operating system I couldn't seem to get it working again, granted I didn't try very hard. If I was in your situation I wouldn't buy it from ebay in case you can't get it to work becuase if you bought it from guitar center or something you could return it. Not the case on ebay. I am going to be gone for a few days but when I get back I can try to get it installed then I will get back to you.

I wanted to record on my laptop, but didn't want to have to buy new hardware, because I like my desktop setup. So I wanted to just get an adapter from the pci card to the cardbus on the laptop. When I search for products like this they are all so expensive. Like this one http://www.team-solutions.com/TSIMain.htm the CB1F for almost $1000! why are these so expensive, doesn't it make sense to just use what I already have?

well what are you using? for example, the echo line of products can all (i think all...but for sure most) take a PCMCIA adaptor that they sell. essentially making them all laptop compatible. if the card is PCI based and you cant find an adaptor, then you are out of luck.
Well, you can use your MAudio Duo on both laptop and desktop.
If you bought a PCMCIA card, just get a PCMCIA reader for your desktop and put it into an empty front bay.
Or you could get the RME Cardbus/PCI card combination and switch the Multiface/Digiface between them.
audiomidi.com usually has really great bundle pricing on these cards.

anyone want to recommend some decent monitors with a flat response? im gonna use them for everything - the duo (if thats what i end up with) will just act as my primary sound card - so they need to be pretty decent. powered is a plus just cos i dont want to mess with amps. just one more thing that can break. 20/20bas look pretty nice for the price.

also, anyone know how much power the headphone out on a duo pushes? in the 200 mA range?

20/20bas

i have the 20/20p... really great monitors i have too say.. i had to readjust from the ns10m but now there is no looking back.. you need a nice size room to trully apreciate them..very nice stereo image.. i believe there is an option for 5.1 Event setup.. i have to check it out...

ok, well unless wisefish comes up with something extreme, i think i have decided on a setup. ill use the duo as a soundcard (primary). ill run the outs to a pair of 20/20bas. midi controllers, etc. with sonar sx.

think ill notice any performance decrease in games with a duo as a primary soundcard? keep in mind it is USB ( )
Ok I am starting to install it right now.
Everything is working perfectly now with the duo, and everything works very well. The first time I tried to install it everything got messed up. The reason I screwed up on the first try was because the drivers were a little different than what I am used to.

Use that link to get your drivers, the 13003_web drivers. Install the drivers before you even plug the duo into the usb port, then after you follow all of the steps read the read me file in your m-audio folder in your program files. Anyway, it works and sounds great.

wisefish, thanks man! i appreciate the test-run. thanks again. ill be grabbing one in the coming days.

one more question. is it possible to use the duo as a primary sound card? id like to do that, and run some reference monitors off of that for my speaker setup in terms of games, etc. think i will notice a performance hit (even though ASIO is low-latency)?
Well, I just tried playing Counter Strike with the duo running in MME mode and it worked but it sounded odd. I will try to test it using ASIO.

thanks. what kind of setup were you using...ie, monitors/speakers running off the duo outs? what sounded odd about it?

sorry for all the questions...just curious.
Well, I was just using the headphone output...with my headphones... ... It just sounded a little distorted but, that was only when playing Counter Strike. When I listened to an mp3 or something it sounded great. I will keep trying to figure it out.
