Linux n00b

I want to install Linux so I can hack my Series 2 Tivo. I have some experience in Unix c shell and I'm sure I'll have no problem coming up to speed, I just don't know anything about it. Which distribution should I try? And what else is Linux good for anyway?

ummmmm you have to use Linux to hack a tivo? Serous question I don't have a tivo. As to what else you can do with linux? What ever else you want to do. It just depends on how much time you want to invest to make unsupported hardware run. Again the distro will most likely be dictated by how much time you have to get it up and running. If it's for the tivo project I'd say do a search on it. I can't realy offer anymore help than that. Sorry and good luck. I wish I had a tivo to hack.

If you just want to hack your Tivo, installing a distro would probably be a waste of time. Just get Knoppix (bootable Linux CD).
