Dell 600m or IBM T42 (or R51)

Which do you suggest?
About me and what I'm looking for: I'm a med student and need a laptop that I can carry around to class and use at home. Right now I have a dell 5150 and love it. However, it's just way too heavy to carry around all day. I mainly use the computer for internet, word/powerpoint, listening to music, and sometimes watching movies. My main concern before was having a 15" screen (since that was what i've had for the past 5 years on my dell 7500), but now I'm willing to compromise for the portability.

I want: light as can be, 14" sxga screen (unless i can find a 15" under 6lbs and not too expensive), as fast a processor as I can afford (preferably the dothan), CDRW, 512mb, and maybe most importantly, long long battery life. I see both computers can come with an extra battery, but IBM seems to think the battery is worth twice as much as dell's. I don't do any gaming. Screen quality matters too.

I've owned two dell laptops and i've been very happy with both. However, I've heard a lot of good things about IBM, and a 1" thick 5lb computer that lasts 6 hours is very tempting. Money is a big issue also, though, and I don't think i'll be able to spend over $1500. The closer to $1300, the better. But which is the better computer, money considered and money not considered.
If anyone has any other suggestions, also, I would be interested. However, I'm fairly set on these two (or three), so don't just list off 50 other notebooks for me to consider. Thanks for any input.

From those two I would recommend the IBM as it of the highest quality you will find in a notebook.

However, another one that fits your requirements is the Toshiba Tecra M2. That one can also be outfitted with a double battery for a total of about 11 hours I believe and it can also be equiped with the 14inch SXGA+ screen that you want. Besides that it is right under 5 lbs and I have heard nothing but good things about it.

Keep in mind the IBM you order will be expensive unless you have some discount.

600m and T series IBM are in a different league for different customers at a different price point. My buddy just got a 600m with Dells one day $750 dollar off coupon--he got the machine with decent specs for 800 dollars incl shipping and tax. Dell has been running insane 1 day deals off and on for a few weeks now--apperantly trying to boost 3rd quarter numbers. T series is much superior--but it's also going to cost anywhere from 1700 to 3200 retail depending on the model.
