Just Ordered A Toshiba M30X - Page 2

I have a special request for those that have bought the M30X with the Mobility 9700 and the trubrite screens to do a review of their system. And of course include a lot of pics.

For the people who find the 4200 rpm from Toshiba painfully slow and want to upgrade their harddrive to 5400 / 7200 rpm I just stumbled onto this interesting review: Fast Harddrives: The Key to High Performance
post #23 of 80
Thanks for the link jumpman, but hey didn't we just paid for a windows xp license? we shouldn't have to pay for another one just to have the CD if they don't want to expend on the extra cost of having to include an oem cd, well they should just charge for it separately, I havent found a copy that will work with my cd key but I'm downloading an ISO Image that appears to be a XP Pro SP2 OEM Version, I'll keep you posted. Then you could spend those $146 on RAM or something.

bcsan, I'll try to borrow my friends camera to take lots of pics, and I will post a little review in the coming days.

CalvinHobbes, thats some interesting article however I think that benchmark there would have been more accurate if they had used same capacity HDs I mean a 60GB hardrive should have better trasfer rates of those of a 20GB HD just because of Data Condensation, while data condensation might not have the same impact as the rpm's to the final transfer rate I think its one important factor not to be missed, a 60GB 7200 hard drive should have significatly better performance than a 60GB 4200 but a 80GB 4200 should compensate some performance just out of data condensation, and a 80GB 5400 might even be very close to a 60GB 7200 on the final performance.

Just curious, did you try calling Toshiba and asking them if the XP Pro CD was supposed to be included, or if they could send you one? I'm guessing the restore CD's are what you get for the XP Pro licence, but it's worth a shot to call them if you haven't already. You shouldn't have to have all that junk software on your system if you don't want it.

No more ATi 9700 128MB

Hey everyone,

I was about to build and buy a M30X system last week but had to wait, now the 128MB ATI 9700 isn't an option anymore! DOH! What gives? Did they really run out? I called Toshiba direct sales and got a generic answer of, "Sorry, it was indeed pulled from the website recently and will no longer be offered." DOH DOH. Any idea if I build this unit with the basic video if I can upgrade the Video to 128MB ATI myself?

I was just about to buy a Toshiba and now Im very dissapointed... guess Il be looking elsewhere.

All info is truly appreciated!

I did called Toshiba's customer number and the guy told me that only the Restore & Drivers DVD should come in the box, so I ask him what should I do if I wanted to do a clean install and repartition my hard drive, he said Technical support might have a better answer for me, I called the tech support number but I had to hung up before they answered. We should still be able to install windows from another source without infringing the license agreement as long as we use our OEM key.

While my order was being packed there was a $70 instant saving I called them and told them if they could adjust the price but they told me that my option was to cancel my current order and place another one with the instant saving but would take another 12-15 days to ship, so I decided not to go for the saving. but I may had not been persuasive enough.

Also, if you had canceled your order you would not have been able to take advantage of the 128MB video option. As far as the price drop goes, I thought there was some sort of buyer protection law in the US or something where if the price changes within a certain amount of days the company has to refund you the difference or something like that. I know at best buy prices have changed and you just go back to them and they refund you the difference. Could someone please confirm this, as it does bother me a bit that the price went down before I even received the laptop.

If I were you, I would still go with the M30X. The 128MB option was an extra 100.00, and I was debating whether or not it was worth it. I decided to go with the 128MB card as you cannot upgrade the video card, but most everything else you can. But if you are getting the 64MB radeon 9700 your saving 100.00 there, plus the 107.00 rebate, you could use the money you save to upgrade your hard drive, memory, and get the 2.0 dothan, and you would have one killer system for a rediculously low price. I think that the money you would be saving by going with the M30X, VS the amount of money you would have to spend going to another company and going with their top of the line models to get a 128MB video card is not really worth the performance difference. I just think the extra money you save could be used to upgrade other parts of the computer. Just my 2 cents.

Good Points! I did just that and ordered the darn thing! I got a 2.0 Dothan, 512MB, 40GB, ATI 64MB 9700, DVD Multi Drive, with a 15.4" Trubrite Display and it came to about $1600 even, plus tax in CA, and 9.99 shipping. Grand total was $1750.00. Not too shabby. Im looking into bumping up the memory to a Gig and throwing in a larger 5400rpm hard drive 80 or 100gb, and selling the spares on Ebay. I think that will make it a killer system.. and pretty portable to boot!

One last question though, can the Toshiba CD/DVD Multidrive be replaced with a 3rd part DVD drive. Just curious as I would love to swap it out for a Dual Layer DVD drive if possible.

Any and all info is appreciated!

Nice, thats going to be a sweet setup. I got the 40GB hard drive like you, and am debating whether to get the 7200 60GB hitachi or an 80GB 5400 hitachi. From what I've heard hitachi makes the best 2.5" hard drives. As far as the Dual Layer drive, I think it is possible to upgrade just about anything on the laptop, but the only problem is knowing how to do it. Toshiba does not make their service manuals available to the public, so I have been having trouble trying to locate one. The M30X is fairly new, so the service manual is not yet available on ebay, but should be in a few months. I am planning on upgrading to a 2.0 dothan when they are a little cheaper, but don't want to experiment with the laptop trying to take it apart. I would try to find a service manual for the M30X, and then go from there. If I find one I'll let the people here know, as I'm sure I am not the only one looking for it. I may just have to take a little trip to a nearby toshiba service department.

P.S. You also might want to consider an external Dual layer drive if you don't plan on buring DVD's on the road. They are probably much higher quality than any internal drive, and you could get a top brand name such as plextor.

about the price drop , i belive that the law is only applicable for the retail store, to ask them for a refund that is....they're right that only way you could take advantage of that is cancel and reorder new one as my friend had done it before with sonystyle when centrio was droppin the tag.

Want to buy the M30x (My first laptop )

Hi guys,
I just stumbled upon this website & i think its great.

I am planning to buy the following config :

Satellite M30X
Intel® Pentium® M 725 Processor (1.6 GHz, 2MB L2 cache, 400MHz FSB), ATI® Mobility Radeon™ 9700 graphics w/64MB of VRAM,
40GB HDD (4200rpm),
15.4" Wide-screen XGA Display w/TruBrite Technology,
512MB PC2700 DDR333 SDRAM (256MBx2),
DVD Super Multi drive

Any suggestions regarding the config ?? This works out to be $1313/- + taxes (free shipping available)

Also, how is the international service from Toshiba?

Thanks

My order status just switched from order being packed to shipped today. It took 12 days for mine to ship, and I think 8-9 days for barranco's to ship, so yours should ship any day now. If I remember correctly you ordered yours a few days after I ordered mine, so I would imagine yours would probably ship tomarrow or thursday. If not, I would call toshiba.

Looks like a good config. If you don't plan on burning DVD's on the road, you may want to save yourself 49.00 and go with the regular CD-RW/DVD drive, and get an external DVD-RW drive, as the external drives are much better quality. Also, not sure if you plan on upgrading the HD or not, but if you don't plan on upgrading you may want to get a larger HD. 40GB will be used up very quickly these days. I would probably reccomend upgrading the HD yourself anyways, as 4200 RPM is pretty slow. I would get an 80GB 5400 or the 60GB 7200. Everything else looks good though, the price difference between the 1.6 dothan and 2.0 is in my opinion not worth it unless you have deep pockets. I plan on upgrading to a 2.0 when the price goes down, and when I can find one of the M30X service manuals.

That is one killer config for the price, as jumpman said you should upgrade your HDto a larger/faster model I would keep the Multi-drive though as you don't know when you might need it and besides you have saved a bunch of money already, and its probably not a bad Idea to still go for an external drive if you plan on burning DVDs from your laptop since the internal drive is pretty slow.

To tell you the truth if I had to choose from the system I bought:

Satellite M30X
Intel® Pentium® M 725 Processor (1.6 GHz, 2MB L2 cache, 400MHz FSB), ATI® Mobility Radeon™ 9700 graphics w/128MB of VRAM,
80GB HDD (4200rpm),
15.4" Wide-screen XGA Display w/TruBrite Technology,
512MB PC2700 DDR333 SDRAM (256MBx2),
Atheros Wireless lan a/b/g
DVD Super Multi drive

$1818 + tax

and yours I would in less than a second go for yours, you can't beat that price.

Hey jumpman I'm starting to think if we should be eligible for a discount

Does your restore CD say M30X on it? I was just trying to delete a bunch of the crap software on this thing off and I deleted some drivers on accident. I plopped in the restore CD to recover them and it said that this restore CD is for P30 / P35 series. Then I looked at the restore CD, and sure enough it is a P30 / P35 series restore CD. I had a bunch of drivers installed on the lappy for things that I didn't even have such as the atheros wireless lan. I was wondering if your Restore CD is M30X? Also, my fan turns on every 15 seconds and sounds like a vaccume. Does yours do this?
