Just Ordered A Toshiba M30X - Page 3

Well, I just solved the problem with the recovery disc. I guess the p30 p35 recovery disc was supposed to come with the laptop as it has all the same drivers on it as the m30x. For some reason I cannot put the disk in and install the drivers off the disc though, but they are available on toshibas website anyway. I am going to make my own recovery disc when I get a clean copy of windows XP pro anyway so no big deal. I was wondering what you guys are experiencing for fan noise, and how often it comes on though. My fan seems to be comming on quite often, and just want to make sure this isn't unique to my laptop. Thanks for any replies.

yes mine says for M30X and M35X series on the cd itself and too when it auto boots up inside windows.

I just took out and replace new hitachi 7200 rpm hdrive and then i simply installed the drivers/applications separately from restore CD..and everything seems working fine along w/ my clean install WinXP pro oem CD..

I don't think my fan turns it on as often as yours more like 1 or min , its pretty cool inside my house , doubt if that might contributes lowerin temp..however i do believe there is this application about adjusting the FAN into silent mode or performance , it should be under toshiba Power saving uitility program as i was playin around.

Glad to hear things are running smooth for you. Looks like I did get the wrong restore CD, I will call toshiba tomarrow and have them send me the right one. I'm about to try some games on this thing, so if their is a problem with heat or something, I'm sure that will bring it out. I think my problem with the fan may be that I uninstalled the toshiba power saving utility program (along with everything else in the add remove programs list ). I saw all those programs and just figured I would uninstall them all, and then reinstall what I needed. I am going to purchase XP Pro OEM with my hitachi 7200 RPM drive in a few weeks. This installation is only temporary. Keep me updated on how that hitachi drive is working as well. In another post here a guy told me that the hitachi drive actually runs 10 degrees C cooler than his old 4200 RPM drive.

Thanks guys for your advice.

I was initially thinking about the Del8600 with a similar config, but this works out to be a much better deal. Also liked the sony ones, but were way too costly for my budget.

I think I'll go for the 60gb upgrade ($50 extra). Also, I'll go with the DVD Super drive. It might come handy as it can write + & - formats, plus its just $49 more than the CDRW/DVD combo.
But I want to know how the service from Toshiba is as compared to industry standards. I might need international service at times too.

Thanks again guys.

Regarding the wireless card ... there are 2 options for the same price
1. IntelĀ® Wireless Pro 2200BG (802.11g)
2. Atheros Wireless LAN (802.11b/g)

Any suggestions on which one I should go for?

Well, speaking of wireless, i have intel wirelesspro 2200b/g I just installed driver and its intel wireless program which I tried use as my primary wireless detection instead letting my windows detects. and for some reason it found the signal with full strength, but it won't assign the ip in order for me go online...What gives???

I also tried uninstall the program and simply let my windows detects with no avail and same thing that no ip is assigned..but full strength signal...
I have like 3 computers on wirelss at home gettin on with no problem, and my DHCP is enabled for like 10 users...,

so has anyone here encountered similar problem?

I don't have that problem with my toshiba, but I have had that problem many times with other computers. Most of the time it just takes a while for the computer to configure for the auto IP. Whenever that happens to me I just leave my computer running and connected to the access pont for about a hour, and then come back, and most of the time the internet works. If it doesn't then I usually start messing around with the router and modem. Sometimes you just have to cycle the modem. Anyway, I would just start messing around with different things. Computers do stupid things for no apparent reason, and then problems go away for no apparent reason.

I went with the Intel 2200BG. It's the standard for centrino and works excellent in my opinion. In my old tower I had a PCI linksys wirless network adaptor W/ speedbooster, and that was usually around 40-50% signal strength. With the Intel 2200BG, I am always on excellent connection. The router is a floor down, way on the other side of the house going through like 5 walls. To get an excellent connection is pretty impressive.

Hey barranco, I was wondering if you had any luck with that XP Pro image. Also, if you just downloaded an image for regular XP Pro without SP2 couldn't you just download the SP2 update from microsoft? Anyway, just wondering how it worked if you did it.

I haven't found one yet, I could only found retail versions however I remembered that my friend bought a Gateway back in september I called him and he told me he did got a clean copy of windows xp pro, so I might just borrow he's and I'll just try to make an image out of it.

I've been using the M30X for +12 hours a day work for 3 days now with the following apps:

#always running#
Firefox 1.0
Winamp
Skype
MSN Messenger
Apache/PHP Server service
MySQL Service
Synergy (client)

#running 1 or 2 at a time#
Flash MX 2004 & SEPY actionsript Editor
Illustrator 10
Dreamweaver MX 2004

Still with only 512mb of ram I haven't found a single complaint about it performance wise, I feel the M30X performance very close to my Athlon +2600 desktop at least for what I tend to do on a daily basis.

One funny thing I've noticed is that as I do a lot coding my right arm is always on top of the right speaker and part of my left arm on top of the left speaker.... that might not be the best location to place the speakers, anyhow is something I don't really mind.

On another note, I've found a stuck Red pixel on my LCD screen, yack! the good thing is that its just 5 pixels from the top edge and little over the right I don't remember seeing it while inspecting my LCD back when it arrived, but as I said is not on a very noticable part so I don't really mind besides is always hiding under winamp's dark colors

Hey I was wondering wich RAM to buy, and I noticed there is the Kingston 512mb Module(KTT3311/512) for about $170 and theres another module wich appears to be the same other than having diferent Part Number(KVR333X64SC25/512) wich is $112, and all the other brands are on the $100 margin, what's with the KTT3311 that its so expensive?

If you like to place your laptop next to your desktop theres this little app called Synergy wich let's you use one keyboard and mouse for 2 or more computers using their on screen, it's easy to setup and its FREE

I must admit, this isn't a bad gaming laptop. I played a game of C & C generals at 1280x800 on high detail. The game lasted for over 4 hours, and ran like butter the whole time. I really don't think this lappy gets all that hot inside, considering there is only one vent for the heat to come out of. My fan does kick on quite a bit, but that may be due to the fact that I uninstalled all the power saver apps (trying to get the correct restore CD from toshiba), and also I think the laptop is just trying to keep it safe. I think their are three settings for the fan, and usually when it goes on it goes on the lowest one, and occasionally the medium one. Only during that 4 hour round of generals did it ever go on high, and it only did it 2 or 3 times the whole game, and when it did go on it only went on for a few seconds.

hey, jumpman I played C&C Generals Zero Hour too but I only have 2 res options 800x600 and 1024x768 how did you get it to run at 1280x800?

happy to hear about the win xp pro, right on.

nevermind the question about C&C resolution I've found out that you have to modify Options.ini thanks anyways I would have never know that you could play at 1280x800...

Just tried downloading the omega drivers, and they are much better than the cats that came with the computer. You can also clock your video card yourself. I downclock my video card when I am doing webbrowsing or something non intensive, and clock it up when playing a game. Fan hardly ever goes on now when I am not doing an intense task. Anyway, just thought I would through it out there, as ati does not allow you to upgrade drivers for mobility cards on their website. You are pretty much stuck with what toshiba gives you unless you go with the omega drivers.

Thanks to all of you for your posts. I took a cue from it before ordering a Toshiba M30X with the following config on 3rd Nov:

2.0 GHz
512 MB X 1
60 GB HDD 4200 rpm
ATI Radeon 9700 w/ 64 MB RAM
15.4" TruBrite
DVD Multidrive
Atheros Wireless a/b/g

I went for the laptop because I felt that this model offered better value for money compared to either Dell, HP, Gateway or Sony (personal opinion). In retrospection, after reading your recent posts, I feel I should have gone for a 1.6 GHz. Anyway, I wanted to upgrade my HDD from 4200 to either 5400 or 7200 rpm, but when I called Toshiba authorized service center, they dissuaded me from doing so because they felt higher rpm HDDs are more prone to hard disk failure (and thereby data loss) in laptops on-the-move that accidently get bumped. They said a good option is to use an external hard drive with a higher rpm. Is it true? Any thoughts?

On a different note, I wonder why ATI Mobility 128 MB was discontinued. It is not an option at all for M30X these days. I'm not into gaming much, but my architect wife plans on using the notebook occasionally for AutoCAD. I wonder how much difference would be there between the two.

I can't wait to get my notebook. From the earlier posting, I reckon it could arrive as early as 13th Nov instead of 12-15 business days Toshiba sales folks tell me. The order is being packed so there's hope..
i really doubt a 7200 rpm hd would really impact your data because I haven't seen people complain about their hd of losing data. As for autocad i think you should be fine with the ATI MR9700.

I was just wondering if any of you guys know how to take apart the M30X so you can get to the CPU socket. I ordered it with a 1.6 dothan, and have been encoding a lot of DVD's to DivX. It's been taking a little under 3 hours per DVD. I looked at some benchmarks of the 2.0 dothan, and it is significantly faster at encoding than the 1.6 dothan (looks to be around 50% faster at encoding). I haven't tried to take apart the laptop yet, and do not want to mess around with removing screws and what not when I am not sure what I am doing. Also, there is an M30 service manual available on ebay. Does the M30 use the same case as the M30X? If so, that would probably work right? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks
