Damn, some of you guys must be filthy rich... - Page 5

and half the people are probably lying about their income...lol

MANY people buy these monster setups on financing from dell or alienware, hence they dont have the cash sitting there, or if they do, they arent in a position to pay it off and still have a comfortable amount left over. I notice that in many cases its a decision on how much you want to owe, rather than how much you have to spend. I paid this off the day it shipped because I dont want massive credit card bills for a computer.

Now SOME have the cash, and do pay them off, but I'd guess that many do, even though some will chime in and try to yell at me and say they have all this money etc...its basically a credit card game.

I can tell you I'm not rich, or even close to it. As a matter of fact, I'm only 16, going on 17 come this January.

Story is, my godfather originally owned a landscaping business, but moved down to South Carolina and gave the business to my Dad. Since my Dad already has a job he can't really manage it all on his own. Me, having no job at the time and absolutely dieing to get one to of course save up for a new computer, just so happened to ask me If I would take the landscaping job. So basically, I generally own it, but because I’m still a minor I obviously can't pay for the Commercial Insurance on the truck or anything like that. So anyways, that was just so you have a background so you don't think I'm a multi-millionaire CEO. That's another story...but anyways....

Just from the landscaping job, despite the fact that I pay at least $200 (yes, believe it or not) in gas, and my Dad pays $$$ for the commercial insurance (not sure how much it is), I still make well over enough to cover the monthly expenses to pay for an ALX. I don't have it yet, but I've got about $5,400 saved up already so not too far to go. That includes two 19"ers.

Case in point, I actually already purchased a Sentia laptop for my friend, (yeah, I owed him big). It was only about $90 a month, but even with the little landscaping business, I was able to pay it off completely.

So point is, for all you guys out there who still have a Pentium 3 500 MHz and 128MB SDRAM, there is hope! Believe me, my first computer was a AMD K6 2 3DNow. Second computer was an Emachines T1120, with a 1.2GHZ Celery. I thought there was no end to the problems and, just general crap. Having to turn every single setting down and reading all these long and boring pages upon pages of INI tweaks and such.

* wakes up
Whoa, I didn’t expect to write that much. I feel bad for anyone who actually read all of that! :P

Heh and here the last computer I bought for myself was an AMD K7 500 that I built for myself that at the time was fairly top of the line(Equivalent to about an alienware out there then and cost me about 400 dollars. Helps if you can get stuff cheap.

I bought a laptop that was returned to the manufacturer a year ago that was supposed to get me through college(What is remaining of it) for about eight hundrted dollars, AMD K7 2000+ etc. Still biting that one.

I am saving up for a new laptop since the last one doesnt do audio or linux but so well and those are both requirements for me, that will bite me hard at about 4 grand most likely.

I am a self supporting sollege student who is married and whose wife attends the same college, both of us living off my income. I hardly consider myself rich, but when it comes to computers I rebuild and do anything I can to save money since most repairs I can take care of myself if a part can be salvaged I do it with a lot of time and a soldering iron half the time.

I work audio as much as I can which pays decent, was paid a little over 300 a week last summer and given lodging and most of my bills paid for doing summer stock, which aint all that great pay considering what I could be making during a regular season or if I had worked a tour(Wife would have killed me). While in school I work odd jobs, currently I am working building a set or three for a company near me for 10 bucks an hour, running the tech of their shows for 9 an hour, and the odd union call for show load ins and outs at about 200+ a day(At most 2 days a week usually)

I pay for college via student loans, everything else I make pays for living expenses with a little left over, all this adds up to mean that I Have NO LIFE at all between school and the multiple jobs(Typically no more than 3 at a time though thankfully, Though I did just get asked to surpervise an audio install which would be my 4th job running currently, that is how I plan to pay for laptop.

So essentially I work my arse off to have enough money for the highest quality things that I will be using for my work(By the way I attend college for sound design, thus the need for a high quality audio laptop).

Hope it answers the original question.

Seablade

PS I also worked in retail for several years before returning to college.

PPS I do NOT recomend this route to ANYONE unless sleep is absolutely a bane of your ecxistance.

PPS I dont have a big e-penis

PPPS To many p's, and I will be paying about 20+ grand in student loans when I leave school most likely. Yea I am that poor, had to rebuild my apartment we moved into to save some money, ended up costing me at least a months rent to rebuild it because I didnt trust the landlord to do it right.

Well, my parents bought me an Alienware, after I pulled off a 4.8 GPA.

My dad makes around 70,000/yr.
my mother makes around 80,000/yr. combined income.

in high school it doesnt.... (or in least mine didnt)... the highest in my class was around what he said...

Some districts have GPAs on a 4.0 scale, some on a 7.0 scale, and some just have GPAs out of 100 (like my high school did). So my 92 on the 100 scale is a 3.68 on a 4.0 scale. There are probably all types of scales out there so basically everyone is right. Cmon guys, big AW hug

And at my school the highest was a 5.0. This was only possible if yo got A's in the advanced placement classes in which an A counted for 5 points instead of the more mundane 4 points. So 4.8 is possible.
My senior year I think the highest gpa was in the 4.6 area.

advanced placement courses are college credits and therefore go at a 5.0 base grading scale. Getting a B in an AP class is the equivalent of an A in any other class.
