just purchased a hp/compaq nx7000, any reviews? - Page 6

the model I saw at compusa (it was the compaq variety) didnt have any burn in, I played with it for a while too. I imagine if anything has this problem a demo computer would cause its on the desktop all day.

i just saw the x1000 in person at compusa. GREAT looking machine. Thin, light, overall good quality. Screen was the WXGA but it looked really good, the colors were vibrant, viewing angles pretty good, etc. Very nice machine! I'm going to order one online today or tomorrow.

by the way the 15.4" widescreen is perfect size for me. Gives me some space but it s not *too* big. I saw the 17" widescreen sony and it has the proportions of a skateboard practically. Way too wide for carrying around IMO. The 15.4" screen seems perfect for me.

Well, I just ordered mine. 1.6 ghz, 128mb ram(bought 512 from crucial), 60GB 5400 rpm HD, WXGA+(1680x1050) screen, wi-fi, bluetooth. Should be a good machine!

I think I read somewhere on anandtech that they are coming up with faster centrino proc. so now in the next few years i can upgrade to those. I am really happy with my purchase.

1.5 centrino
512 mb ram
60 gig 5400 rpm
ati 9200

At first I was rock solid sure that i would be getting a sager, but this compaq is great and so where all of the savings I and i'm sure everyone else here does too.
the new centrinos look really, really nice. 1.8-2.0mhz, with 2Mb cache! Also because of the new manufacturing process they will supposedly be cheaper than current centrinos. Release date is Q42003 so probably early next year ;-)
will you have to update the mobo to use the 2mb cache?
dunno, I think its on a new manufacturing process so I dont know if it will fit on current mobos.
well i just hope that the new ones will fit in the current mobos, i mean it only makes sense since these things just came out like this year and intel would probably lose money if they were not compatible with curent mobos.

this is true, o man....2 ghz with 2mb cache!

So did we get the RAM slot thing resolved? If so, what was the outcome? I'd like to know cause I am considering this laptop.
I noticed that many people are buying their ram from crucial. I went to newegg and noticed that they are selling a 512 SODIMM 200 PIN for 40 bucks cheaper. Would this ram work in the compaq x1000?

This memory slot thing is confusing...

On hpshopping.com, you can select either a single chip or 2 chips (which to me seems like 1 is built in and one is removable). The x1000 manual only shows 1 memory slot also.

On crucial's website, they say that this laptop has 2 slots (2 banks of 1).

System info.
Maximum memory: 2048MB
Standard memory: 128 or 256MB removable
Slots: 2 (2 banks of 1)
Explanation of memory terms

Their explanation of slots..
"3 (3 banks of 1) This indicates that there are 3 memory slots. These are divided into 3 banks, and each bank consists of one memory slot. So you can add memory one piece at a time for the system to use. "

Does this mean that the x1000 has 2 lots?

I think it does. But the question is if the memory you order in the first slot is hard wired to the mobo.
One or two slots, that's the question

I just called Compaq Support and talked to a technician.

The second slot is located under the keyboard and is not hard wired.

Now, I have to decide if I can live with a fixed optical bay, meaning I have to get an external DVDwriter in the future.

From the techspec:

http://h18000.www1.hp.com/products/q.../11667_na.HTML

0-MB of memory on system board,
2 Slots total
1-256MB DIMM installed in Slot 1
1-Additional open Memory Slot

It is a SLOT. Compaq, err, no one uses the terminology 'slot' unless it is a slot. There are 2 slots and no memory on motherboard.

I covered this earlier but everyone bust have just skipped over it.

i ordered mine and it got here in 2days, hehe, from pcconnection, the only bad thing, 1 dead pixel, forgot to get dvd/rw only got dvd so I'm hitting myself for it. Oh and I took it to starbucks yesterday and tried the tmobile free one day pass thing, I must say it was fast like 150kb/sec and I was instantly connected, pressed the radio on button and boom it showed tmobile and I was on. The battery lasted 3 hours with highest brightness and winamp playing in the background while browsing and a little 3d gaming of diablo 2. Everyone around me was impressed with the widescreen and how thin and light this thing was. I advice getting a usb notebook mouse as the pad on this machine is not very good compare to the dell600M i had and the scrolling thing next to the pad is horrible, it scrolled way too fast and there was no way to configure the thing. Now where can I find the cheapest external cdrw or dvd burner? lol
