I posted this over at the x1000 forums ( http://www.x1000forums.com )

I think we should try some of these options cause this could be a damn good laptop then.

-----

Well, I know the x1000 and Dell's D800 and M60 are manufactured by Compal. Therefore it is very possible that the systems can be upgraded.

First of all, have anyone done a full tear down of their laptop and taken pictures they can post? This is the first and most important step.

Second, I have part numbers for the Quadro FX that is shipping in the Dell M60 so if we can determine that the video card boards are the same (more than likely) then that means they could be swapped. How nice would it be to have a 128 nVidia FX card?!

Thirdly, Dell have a DVD+R that can be bought with their laptops. I don't know if the slots are the same for the peripherals (need a break down with pictures of the shape and connector of the drive in the x1000... can someone do this?). But if they are the same, except for the color differences, they should be swappable. [note: i understand its a fixed bay but i'm sure it is replaceable since they won't give you a new machine over a faulty dvd drive--or maybe they would]

Forth, I'm not sure is the x1000 have a mini-PCI bay, but if it does, it is possible to upgrade the card to 802.11g spec. If someone can find this out, then I can post where to buy a 802.11g (linksys) card. [note: i'd link to the excellent post here on sager for for 802.11g card]

But it appears as if only one slot is easily accessible, the other one located somewhere else and the memory possibly hardwired ? and not replaceable?
I talked to a sales rep. He said that if you have 15 min, and a screw driver, you can install different memory into the hidden slot. It's under the keyboard. Hope this helps.

I just ordered my 1.5ghz version with 128mb ram, 40gb hd, and all the fixens. Then I ordered 1gb DDR for it for an extra $187 with shipping, plus a 5400rpm 40gb drive for another $178, with a usb2 external case for the old one. So for $1504, I got all I need for my work pc.

Where did you order the 1 gb DDR for $187

Check out Mwave for the memory.

Also, you enter the coupon code at the end of your order, and you get 10% off the final laptop price. You can find 60gb 7200rpm hard drives at newegg for about $353 a piece.

Has anyone else been keeping up with x1000Forums.com lately? The general opinion seems to be souring on these. They're reporting a 100% defect rate on the keyboards and about 30% of them have other miscellaneous defects, including dead hard drives.

Lots of people returning them.

I'm happy with mine.

The keyboard thing (pressing <shift> key with 2 other keys at the same time, then 3rd key does not work in shift mode) is not an issue for me

great screen, good sound, about 4h battery life.

Glad to hear it! I tried one at Best Buy and it seemed pretty cool. Decent price too, with all the discounts if you order from HP. The one thing I didn't like was: it's a Compaq. Since HP & Compaq merged you never know which heritage a particular model comes from. In this case, the wimpy BIOS tells the story. HP's have a much more capable BIOS, Compaq's have only a couple of configurable options and a history of proprietary weirdness that only works well with the original, factory installation image.

How have people fared with reinstalling Windows? Does everything still work? I'm a hard-core Linux user, so have to be careful about BIOS options. Some of the recent Toshibas are even worse -- they are legacy-free and have no BIOS screens at all. They depend on special programs to configure the hardware and only work with Windows.

I guess i'll just have to live with a 100 dollar lost rather than 170 dollar lost. I will post pics and benchmark tomorrow when it get here. But hey, this system looks great doesn't it?
I am also about to order NX 7000 fro pcconnection.
Are you still happy with your laptop?

Thanks for the X1000 WUXGA comments. I'm surprised the home office model offers higher native res than the 'business' model. But what the American consumer doesn't know is what drives our economy. Can the X1000 be customized on any reseller websites? Sounds like the prices are better, but if I want a 1.6-WUXGA/256MB/40GB yadayadayada, do I just cough up the cash at HP?
