DVD Soundless

{Let me preface my comment with the knowledge that this is my first install with XP (Pro) and my first instance troubleshooting DVD issues on a laptop.}

I got my 8886 (hence the clever login) last night. I installed XP and the drivers. Nothing noteworthy; everything is working wonderfully except one small but annoying grievance.

I don't have any sound when I play DVD's. I can play MP3's fine, and I can play CD's fine in my combo drive. If this were my desktop, I would check the decoder connection. I don't really know where to start on a laptop.

Help is appreciated.

First, if you haven't make sure nothing is muted. Go to Start/Programs/Accessories/Entertainment/Volume Control and see if it's muted. I don't have a demo in front of me to go over/confirm the DVD playback settings, but you might to to check those too.

Make sure you installed the drivers of the CD as I listed HERE

With the drivers CD installed, click "My Computer" and click the CD drive (probably Drive E). Click Drivers, Audio, Setup.exe and it will go through setup. During setup you will need to click next once and when it's done click "Finish" and it will reboot the system. When it reboots go to your control panel (start/settings/control panel) and click "Sounds and Audio Devices". Click the "Audio" tab and then click "Advanced". Select from the pull down menu "5.1 Surround Speakers", click "apply" and then OK, and OK again to close and save it.

Update

I followed all of your instructions during my initial install. I'll try reinstalling the drivers when I get home from work.

AFAIK, nothing is muted. I know that I did not mute anything, and I have checked everywhere I can think to check. I only spent about one distracted hour last night trying to get it working. If nobody has had a similar experience, I probably did something wrong. I'll devote some time to it tonight and check back in tomorrow.
