This poll stems from a thread that I statred in the Dell General section asking about which antivirus software people thought was recommendable. I got so many varied answers that it has actually left me more perplexed than when I first set out!

With this poll I hope to get a general consensus on the best overall antivirus software, by best I mean the software with the ability to quell all the new viruses, spyware, adware and which uses the least PC resources.

Your contribution is most appreciated.

I don't use any anti-virus program. Your judgment on how you use your computer is the best anti-virus program anyone can have.

But even the most precaucious of users must still face the fact that viri and spyware can infiltrate your system disguised as other files.

I use Norton Internet Security 2004 and back it up with Spybot and Ad-Aware. I have never had a problem that they wouldn't take care of.

my school provides Norton Corporate Edition for free....

I have Symantec at work (yes, it is DIFFERENT from Norton: it has all the benefits and none of the resource-hogging). However, for home systems, it is AVG all the way.

What's the name of this program, and how much does it cost?

Its called Symantec Antivirus ...same thing as Corporate Edition... its not available to the public

corporations use it to distribute it to their employees, and the virus definitions are upgraded from a server on the network...

correct me if im wrong myrkat...

This is correct. One of the places that I work uses it at their branches. Basically, the server pulls down the updates (defs, etc.), and pushes the updates out to each computer with the client version, so that all puters stay updated with, basically Norton's anti-virus stuff.

I can tell you now that Symantec's AV client-side takes practically no RAM (5 MB i think?), and runs in the background, smooth as silk. As I'm typing, I'm on a 1 gig Celeron with 128 RAM, and Symantec is running without any hiccups.

Ya I use Symantec Corporate also at home. Version 7 seems to be the best for resources, version 8 uses a little more, and version 9 seems to use even more. I need to find a version 7 to install on my home machine, I have version 9 running on it now. But at work I have 7 and it eats about half as much RAM.

Symantec Antivirus - don't let the "Enterprise" stuff fool you, we're a small firm and use it (it is quite scalable); and I like it much better than the McAfee crap we had before (actually, I dumped McAfee for AVG PRO for over a year, then we went to Symantec).

AVG is great on the home front, but poorly integrates with Exchange Server. It was fine until version 7 came along... I still use and HIGHLY recommend AVG for personal use. Grisoft does a commendable job with it.

I prefer norton corporate over anything else, but AVG is a very close second. I dislike Mcafee and despise Panda.

At home I use Norton, as I like SystemWorks and the AV stuff comes with it. At school, we have some dated Sophos crap, meaning we just use Norton Ghost. Overkill? Maybe.
