Looking to buy a new graphics card

Thread Starter
Hey,

Thanks to AMD finally getting PCI-E, I am planning to build my own system. I already got my other specs, but I have no idea what to buy for my GPU.

First off all things to know

1.) Dont say Nvidia because of SLI, as i have no interest in buying more than one GPU.

2.) I am open to any company. But please, provide reasons.

I am looking mainly for the card that will perform better generally on these games:

Halo, Half-Life 2 , Counter Strike: Source, Quake 4, Sims 2, Need for Speed Underground 2, Far Cry

I know some games are not out yet, but just whatever card would most likely perform better.

Also, please dont recommend just by saying Nvidia or ATI as I know they are very similar, I would really appreciate a actual retail box, such as

ASUS V9999 Ultra Deluxe
BFG 6800 Ultra OC
Asus AX800XT PE
Visiontek Xtasy X800 XT PE

and so on. I am looking not so much for value, but awesome performance.

Any comments would be really appreicated. Thanks Guys

ATI X800 XT or Pro...

V9999 is crap, my friend won one of those @ WCG...it blows

BFG is a heat sucker

go with the asus x800

none of those cards (correct me if wrong) are in pci-e yet.
6600GT, $200, is the best retail card out there now (pci-e), also the x800 xt (also pci-e) for about $700 but i dont recomend that as its not that much faster than the 6600GT. an extra 500 bucks for like 15 FPS in any given game is just stupid. find a 6600GT at newegg, then upgrade later if you have to.

Supposedly the All in Wonder X800xt is coming out within the next few months. That will be a rockin card if you want a full multimedia workhorse.

PCI-x isn't an upgrade...it doesn't score higher or anything...the x800 is the best card right now as far as I'm conserded...

plus look @ his specs, his mobo isn't pci-x

I am planning to build a new system AMD system, not upgrade my current one. If some of these cards are not out yet for PCI-E, can you tell me how their AGP counterpart performs (If its good then when the card comes out for PCI-E, it should still be good)

So far, I am really interested in the Visiontek Xtasy X800XT PE or Asus AX800XT or the PNY 6800 Ultra.

X800...stay away from nvidia, they are hot and outperformed...and the require insane power which can blow out your system (my friend did it to his)

please, the 6800GT blows the x800pro away and the PE vs Ultra battle is pretty close. Nvidias mid-range has always owned ATI's midranged (6600GT vs x700xt is one example). Infact, the only point where ATI is even close to NVIDIA is in the high end sector. 6800vanilla > x800se, 6800GT > x800pro, 6600GT > x700xt. dont tell me they are out performed.

Also they dont require big powersupplys. 6800GT's run on 240W shuttles. a good quality 350 (antec/enermax etc) can easily run a 6800 ultra.

I run a 6800 GT on a 350 PSU, and heck its running at AGP 4x and beats the x800 Pro. nVidia is great, they kick ass, but ATI is a well-rounded solution. Not fat, not hungry, but ready to rip through games. I wouldn't go x800 Pro, but I would go x800 XT if the 6800 just doesnt appeal to you. Its your choice.

I highly highly highly recommend staying anyway from all the third party companies that make ATI products. I purchased a Visiontek Xtasy X800 PRO and graphics were diminished...

go here for pics... http://notebookforums.com/showthread.php?t=37018

If you're going to go X800, go straight Raytheon ATI... not ASUS, Visiontek, Sapphire, ect....

I found out the hard way

agreed. go with ATI if you're going to get an ATI-based board. 3rd-party board makers that use ATI (or whatever the case may be) chip-set take certain 'liberties' in their card production to make it their own (just like how companies do the same for any product they dont actually make themselves *cough cough* ).

Thanks guys... yea about the 3rd party isssues, I bought my current card from ATI and its performing decently. However, I am pretty set on the ATI, and my top two choices are these

1. ATI X800 XT PE
2. HIS Excalibur IceQ X800XT VIVO LE (A beast with a great cooling design, great for OC'ing!)

Nvidia
1. BFG 6800 Ultra OC
2. PNY Verto 6800 Ultra

Thats it...if you guys know nething about the HIS Excalibur tell me about it because I am very interesteed in that card!

The 6800 and the X800 are pretty similar, ignoring all biases here one of those 2 cards should do you wonders
