can anyone tell me how to set up the router so that it will connect to my cable modem and also my pc that it is hooked up to now. this might sound really stupid but ive never used a wireless router before.

Basically,

Cable modem --using ethernet/CAT5 cable--> Wireless router --using airwaves--> Your Computer

Most wireless routers have multiple ethernet ports. So, first connect your computer directly to the router, log in (manual should have default login/pass), set it up using same settings as you use on your computer (DHCP/Static, DNS Servers, ...). Also set up whether you want Encryption or not.

Then,
  1. disconnect cable between your computer & wireless router
  2. connect wireless router to cable modem
  3. plug wireless card into your computer
  4. connect your computer wirelessly to the wireless router

All the stuff I'm telling you should be in your wireless router's manual. Just post again if you have any more questions.

yea, i want to conect my pc and router to the modem, do i need a splitter or can i plug my pc directly into the router.

The Cable Modem plugs into the WAN port on the router and the computer plugs into any of the other ports on the router. No splitter is needed.

If you are getting a Linksys router, all you have to do is go to :
http://www.linksysfix.com/check/index.html?CallerID=KB, then click on Net Assistant. It will take you through every step. If you run into a problem call their tech help. When I called, I hit a menu option and then someone actually answered right away. Amazing, I thought. I am sure that whatever brand router you buy there probably is similar assistance.
