Shuttle vs. Compaq Presario ?

Hi all.
I am leaving my old and sweet HP omnibook 6000 to finally rest in peace.
After reading many posts I came down to two nice configs (both are in
the same price range and similar specs). I would like to hear from
you about them. Before my questions, here are the systems :

Compaq Presario R3000Z
Processor AMD Athlon(TM) 64 3200+ 2.00 GHz
Display 15.4" WXGA BrightView Widescreen(1280x800)
Graphics Card 64MB NVIDIA(R) GeForce(TM) 4 440 Go +1394 & 5-in-1
Memory 1.0GB DDR SDRAM (2x512MB)
Hard Drive 60GB 4200 RPM
Primary CD/DVD Drive 8X DVD Drive
Network 54g(TM) Broadcom 802.11b/g WLAN
Primary Battery 12 Cell Lithium Ion Battery
Windows XP

DIY on my own :
Shuttle XPC SN95G5
Processor AMD Athlon 64 3200+ 512K 2.0 GHz 90 nm (939)
Memory 2x512MB Mushkin PC3200 2.5-4-4
Video Card Sapphire Radeon 9600 Pro 128MB
Hard Drive Samsung 160GB SATA 7200RPM 8MB Model SP1614C
Optical Drive NEC DVD+/-RW Drive Model 3500A
Computer Case & Power Supply Antec SLK3700-BQE with 350W PSU
Display NEC/Mitsubishi FE991SB-BK 17"
Speakers Logitech Z-640 5.1
Keyboard & Mouse Microsoft Natural Multimedia and Intellimouse Optical
No OS.

Both systems are at the same price range (around $1300) and
you probably guessed that portability is not an issue here (compaq weights around 8-9 pounds and shuttle+monitor are not easy to carry either) and
the comparison may sound strange but my questions are

a. The two motherboards are different. Do you know any substantial
differences between them ?
b. How good is this WXGA BrightView ?

I am not concerned about upgrades...from my experience, everytime
I needed to upgrade I moved to a new whole system. Since I do
this each 3-4 years, I have the feeling that choosing between
these two comes down to a matter of taste.

Thanks !

Do you want to play games?

Do you ever plan to take the system anywhere?

Oh, moving these things around will happen one/two times
a year...I do not intend to use the laptop outdoors also.

Games are not also top priority here. I could live with 32mb
for the next two years, for sure.

im not totally sure why your considering a laptop at all, a shuttle or similar SFF pc would fit your needs a whole lot better

Thanks for the replies.

I just put these questions because laptop prices are
very temptative now. If I can get similar specs on
a portable and this shuttle, it would be very nice.

One or two times a year? From where to where?

Shuttle is probably better for your situation.

But a regular sized desktop might be even better if you only plan to move the computer from one part of the house to another

Youhou,

Well, I put those systems on purpose because I am planning to
travel to Brazil next year and stay there a couple of months...
that's why I did not consider regular size desktops. Anyway,
from the feedback I see that both systems should fulfill my needs.

At some point, I wanted to check if anyone has some serious issue
with Compaq Presarios. You know that many times technical
specifications does not means much in the real world...

Thanks.

Youhou,

By the way, my US travels resume going from home to office and vice-versa.
sometimes, I need my computer at the lab but this is quite unusual.

the R3000z is a nice laptop. If i didn't play games, i would have gotten it a long time ago. Instead I have my uber-awesome 258kao. Anyway, don't be so confident in your uses, once you go mobile, you'll never go back. I though I couldn't justify having a lappy, but now i am out and about with it all the time. And..sure enough, my lappy is comparable to the 3000z mobility wise (8lbs and 2h batt). Dude, almost makes me wish i would have gotten a dothan based system..but then i think about it...i got an AMD64...haha..sweet!

Oh, in that case I would recommend the Compaq out of convenience since its less to carry, and maybe you might even want to watch a movie or two on the flight

The Shuttle is certainly not a bad choice if you're willing to carry all that power with you.

I have 2 laptops that I use as desktop replacements, I just like having a system with a smaller footprint and quiet fans. So my vote goes for the notebook. I tried a small form factor system and wasn't really impressed, they still take up alot of desktop space and can be quite loud, if you do go that route make sure to get quiet system.
