easist linux to use

After trying the Windows XP 64....and giving up on trying to get the drivers to work, i think i'm gonna try linux as a dual boot with XP Pro.
Whats the easist linux to learn? Do they all work fine/compatible with my M6810?

Mandrake may be the easiest (just my 2 cents) for a newbie looking to switch to Linux. I personally like Gentoo and slackware, but neither iare probably good for someone looking to ease into it.

I agree Mandrake is the easiest, but I found better luck of getting things to work with Fedora Core 2. I am running that in my M6811 and got everything working except wireless. I just use my old orinoco gold card for wireless now.

Should i just go with 10.0? I'm assuming i need to download all 3 cds...correct?

If I remember correctly, all you really "need" for a bare install is the first one. But you will likely want all three for the additional apps, features, etc.

Would anyone prefer Knoppix?
I use it sometimes for some hardware testing on other's computers. I have a boot CD with most utilities I need, but sometimes toss Knoppix in to use for that purpose also.

I agree with anyone that said Mandrake Linux. Especially now. It's really evolved into a really nice OS (most times more user-friendly than Windows...if you consider Windows to be user-friendly, that is) over the past few years.

i don't know about mandrake being the easiest

xandros probably getst that now.. and suse 9 is pretty damn easy..

pretty much most of the main distros are not hard.. YAST is easier to use imho for a central management util

That said at home i run rhel 3.0

I've used a few but never as a Workstation just a server. Fedora Core 1 and 2 were pretty good as servers but when when I managed to get my hands on Redhat 3.0 AS Server I started using it. When I get bored on a weekend I've got Redhat 3.0 ES Server Update 3 lieing around.

Edit: Oh and I've used Mandrake as a server too. All in all I would say I had the most problems with Mandrake (9.0) then Fedora Core 1/2 and the least amount with Redhat Enterprise.

Be sure to try Mepis (Debian based) and PCLinux online (Mandrake based) I have had good success with both. Ati 3d ok, wireless no joy but not versed enough in Linux to use ndiswrapper. Personally I like PCLinux the best. Mepis seems good to though.Xandros 2.0 wouldn't load for me.I didn't like Knoppix. The big 3 FC,Mandrake, and SUSE seem bloated. Look in to PCLinux and you will be happy . Keep in mind I only used 32 bit versions as I'm still a newbie and play games .
