I am thinking about getting the DVD burner for my notebook and I was wondering if its something I need or not?

what are the + and - of getting it?
can I just get one to swap my old one out??? ( then sell the cdr thing thats in it now?)
can I copy videos?? to them?
Do I need speical software?
and where can I buy it from? Dell??
