8890 memory upgrade

Just running this by folks to see if they think this is a good upgrade for my 8890. Was thinking of getting two of these to jump from 512 megs to 1 gig.

KINGMAX 200-Pin 512MB DDR SO-DIMM PC-3200 - OEM

Model# MSXC22D-KX
Item # N82E16820155124
Specifications:
Manufacturer: KINGMAX
Speed: DDR400(PC3200)
Type: 200-Pin DDR SODIMM
Error Checking: Non-ECC
Registered/Unbuffered: Unbuffered
Cas Latency: 2.5
Support Voltage: 2.5V
Bandwidth: 3.2GB/s
Organization: 64M x 64 -Bit
Warranty: Lifetime

Newegg product page

From the manual this looks to be the correct speed/type and the upgrade itself looks fairly easy.

Thanks!

u will need to get a pair of memory that specifically says it is daul channel, otherwise u could have problems with the memory

i just found this memory here. It is Giel, lifetime and supports dual channel compatibility, which is mandatory for the 8890. i couldn't find any other place on the internet that sold pc 3200 dual channel latpop memory!

anywho, here is the url

I looked at the Giel memory but it was much more expensive. I checked around and found a link back to Newegg from pricewatch that said it was dual channel memory from the same manufacturer for only a few dollars more.

If the memory is not dual channel will it cause damage to my laptop or will it just refuse to boot?

The dual channel memory is the same as the single channel memory. Many people are confused about this. The issue to be solved is to have two pieces of memory that work correctly together - not really a single -v- dual issue.

thats the thing, it has to be from the same manufacturing run, otherwise the timings are likely to be off enough that it will cause instability

when they say it's dual channel, it's not different memory, it's just guaranteed to be able to run dual channel without error

unfortunately, the ram i ordered was the last of the bin! I chose 2 sticks of 512, and outpost.com said they had it in stock. But on my shipping invoice, it says

1 512mb sodimm: shipped
1 512mb sodimm: on backorder

what kind of bs is that? i mean, come on, did i really just order the last 512 geil memory stick? g'ah!

Grrr. That's annoying. Refuse deliever and get your money back. Unless you can handle the wait....
well, i guess i will just see how 512 mb matches with 256 mb non-dual channel. maybe it won't be as bad as i think, and and the same time, i can run the programs i want to.
now then are these two memory sticks the same?

geil ram #1
geil ram #2

only difference i see is that newegg has the model number: GDS3200-512A whereas outpost has model number: GDS3200-512

i guess it doesn't matter if your not getting the dual channel ram
post #12 of 24
well, what do you mean. is it dual channel or not? i have every intention of getting dual channel memory. on the outpost site it claims that the geil ram is compatible. the ram listed on newegg seems to be the exact same thing. i would appreciate some help please, as i have already ordered 1 stick from each compant.

Ok... just to confirm? You *DO* have every intention of getting dual channel memory?! And on the outpost site it *DOES* claim that the geil ram is compatible?!
