My month and a half old Sager 8887-V's audio has taken a disturbing turn for the worse.
Previously, the audio from the laptop was clear and surprisingly good, considering that audio was coming from laptop speakers. However, that was before I decided to transfer my collection of midis to the laptop. Downloading the latest copy of WINAMP, version 2.1, I blithely configured the midi plugin to use the Direct Music / Microsoft Synthesizer (with output) port for midi playback through a software DSP plugin, and configured the Microsoft Synthesizer to use a custom DLS file, fury.dls, which I have used in the past on other systems in the same way with no ill results. I then began playing my midis.
Five midis later, I got a serious error, saying that dmusic.dll had crashed, winamp will be terminated. A fluke perhaps, I thought, trying again after a reboot. No problem this time, so I activated a full screen AVS visualization. Three midis later, the system froze completely, mid-visualization. This required a forced reboot with the power switch, but I discovered, much to my horror, that something evil had occurred. The system power on beep came over the system speakers, popping and warbling, and when Windows XP came up, the audio kept popping, though the warbling vanished, replaced with a 'surging volume' effect. All audio played over the laptop's internal speakers is like this now; however, the headphone jack is unaffected.
This is the first time I've seen a Windows XP crash perform so much evil. The problem isn't quite as bad as it was after that first reboot, but it is still there, just not so noticeable. Any ideas on fixing this problem would be greatly appreciated.
