CONS of Sagers?

Thread Starter
Someone PLEASE post some bad things about Sagers. I've only heard the great things. Outstanding performance and outstanding prices and customization, outstanding customer support and an outstanding forum.

I've only heard a few things about sagers, like the 8887 having bad audio quality, or the mp3 player having no documentation.

poor battery life

audio system in 5670 isnt great but alright

UXGA monitor is good but not as good as the one they had over 2 weeks back

heavy

pricey (but thats cuz u r going for high end)

big in size (duh)

extended warranty not impressive

well those are the bad if u want.. there could be more bads listed if u start mentioning desirables such as raid etc but its not like all other laptops have it.. so it doesnt count

Whats the weight of the 8887, 5867 and the 4670?
8887 = 12 lb.
5670 = 9 lb.
4067? = i dunno
For me, the weight really doesn't bother me.

Sure I guess it would be nice to pack all that power in something ultra-light. But I also realize that isn't too realistic. So I accept that it weighs a bit more than the typical laptop PC does and deal with it. It's never really been an issue with me lugging the thing around either -- and I'm not exactly AH-nold looking in appearance either.

Probably the biggest con for me is battery life. Getting barely over an hour is probably the most annoying part of owning one of these beasties.

Then again, with those desktop processors stuck in there, it's also understandable.

All in all, I'm *very* happy with my 5660.

Good luck,

Joe C.

Sager's product number scheme is really annoying. The 5670 will be replaced by the 5680, not to be confused with the 4760 which will eventually be replaced by the 4770, not to be confused with the 4060 which is very similar to the 4760, but very different from the 5660 which was replaced by the 5670. Not to mention the fact that the 5660 was followed by the release of the 8886, then the 5670 and the 8887 and now the newest model available is the 4760 (with the 5680 and the 8890 coming soon!).

Would it kill them to have a more sensible product number scheme so that people didn't ask confusing questions about the non-existant 5760 or the 4670?

Other than that, Sagers are awesome

Ok, but seriously the only other drawback is that when people ask what kind of new computer you got, and you say "Sager", they respond with "SayWhat?", and you have to give a big long explanation of the benefits of Sager over better known brands. Buying a Dell, Sony, or even Alienware may cost a lot more, but it takes less time to explain.

Ya, I hate heving to tell people my stuff is better than theirs and it was cheaper.

Things I don't like about the 5760:

No port replicator
Keyboard needs work in overall quality
No mouse stick. You only get the touch pad
The drives open on the same side as my mouse. Not huge but they bang into the mouse pad all the time
Runs hotter than my Dell Inspiron
Not enough of a sample group to determine the true reliability of the unit. Seems good, but until the total numbers are known you just can't say
Performance isn't as high benchmarkwise as it should be. Dell's compete at almost the same level with a slower processor. Course benchmarks aren't a tell all, but frame rates are an indicator.
IMO, only Dell competes with a Sager 5760. Voodoo and Alien are too expensive and the other laptop makers are just too geared toward business. The Inspiron 8500 (mine is an 8100) is a great laptop, but the Inspiron line is returned quite a bit for repairs. Not to mention getting a fully configured laptop from Dell is just less bang for the buck. If you purchase aftermarket on the HD and memory for a new Dell, you can get a comparable laptop performance-wise. However, it will still be a little more than a Sager. The other thing you have to look at is just how easy it is to upgrade a laptop. With a Dell you can upgrade the processor and video card to some degree. Not nearly as easy or varied as the Sager though.

When I buy a new one in the next couple months, it is going to be a hard choice. I love my mouse stick on the Inspiron and the keyboard is excellent, but a 3ghz with more memory and bigger HD from Sager may be just too hard to pass up.

The only downside to the notebooks i can see besides what has been said, is that there is no 7200rpm hard drives.

other than that, soon as im done saving up im getting one

the product numbers arent that confusing to me.. I think prostars are a bit worse.. there is a 4xxx series a 5xxx series a 8xxx series and a 2xxx series and a 6xxx series.. all different styles and markets.. it would be more confusing IMHO if they decided to label them all 5 something, or are you wanting some catchy name like latitude dimension or something.. It's just a name..

Another con is for international buyers....

Since sagers have only retailers in the u.s if you buy from them and have a problem with the hardware, you have to pay for shipping to and from and possibly duties (depending on where you live)

Than again you could go with other sager resellers in your area (in my case eurocom but the price is insane for what they provide) PCtorque is the way to go IMO....hopefully when i get my sager, i wont have any problems.

Wow, thats the first time I've ever heard someone say that they like that little annoyance better than a touch pad. To each his own... but those things just annoy the hell outta me.

Whoa, someone complaining about NOT having an eraserhead???? My god, the world is going to end tomorrow!

Those damned trackpoint/eraserhead thingy's has GOT to be the most annoying thing I've EVER used. I hate their guts. You can't make them go to where you like, its a struggle just using them. Granted, touchpads have a similar problem, but not quite as bad as the eraserheads.

Remember the old laptops that used to have trackballs? No THAT was a good idea. Easy to use, and compact. I wonder why no one every makes trackball notebooks anymore...

cause eventually you'd lose the trackball. or get it too dirty to use, but now they have super small optimice that you can use on your knee or even small trackballs. they got wires, but so what.

i love my eraserhead mouse stick. i cannot work with nor stand trackpads.
I can't stand either one, but at least with the touchpad, little pressure needs to be applied.

That's why I go for the mini optical mouse. Works right on the wristpad.

I'm fixing to order a Sager once they announce the new products hopefully here in the next couple of weeks.

The only thing keeping me from buying a Sager today is the lack of a 7200rpm drive in the current models. Here's to hoping the newer ones are up to snuff.
