Need a notebook

Looking to buy a notebook.

Needs to run cool enough to be used on lap.
Good 3d, modem, wifi, 512mb ram, xp pro a plus.
All for 1500 or less, less would be better !
Like to do 3d raytracing for fun and surf the net,
will be plugged in to ac 99% of the time.
Doesn't have to be the latest and greatest.
15 inch display or better.
Lot to ask I know.

Also how much better is dedicated graphics with dedicated
ram, than non dedicated ram ?

Do all intergrated graphics stink for games and 3d raytracing ?

Thanks for your input.

Integrated graphics can play most games from a year ago prettyg good. But even 2-3 year old dedicated gpus can beat the hell out of intel integrated stuff. Also... yes all integrated graphics suck.

Maybe you should look at the CL56. You can get that for about that price.

You could also look into the deals that some of the big brand name vendors have (dell, hp, etc.)

The CL56 would be overkill in the mobility department if he's going to be plugged in 99% of the time.

I suggest getting an Athlon64 DTR from Sager or eMachines

raytracing is entirely CPU dependent

I just purchased the hp r3000z for $1,144.70. They have a 10% off coupon for everything over $1299 plus a $100 rebate. The only problem is the old 64MB vid card... but if you don't play games like the new Doom, then you are OK.

- Win xp home (I have XP pro CD to upgrade)
- AMD64 3400
- 15.4" WXGA Widescreen (1280x800)
- 64MB NVIDIA(R) GeForce(TM) 4 440 Go +1394 & 5-in-1
- 80 GB 5400 RPM Hard Drive
- 4X DVD +/- RW/R & CD-RW Combo
- 54g(TM) Broadcom 802.11b/g WLAN !!
- 12 Cell Lithium Ion Battery
- Built in Bay w/USB Digital Drive and 64MB
- Purchased with 256 ram... but purchased another 512 stick on newegg.com for $91.

Low prices since HP will release some new models this Nov or Dec... but for what you get, this machine rocks... plus it has solid reviews.

Exactly. I would also say CL56, even for the power requirements.

The power and heat requirements are not mutually excludents.

Acer Travel 4501 with 15.3" Widescreen or if you are willing to go to a 14.1 XGA screen, Acer Travelmate 3201, pretty much the same spec but the 4501 is 6.6lbs and the 3201 is 4.8lbs.
