Will Gateway 7405GX hinge side crack ?

Most of the emachine Athlon 64(Arima designed) notebook have cracked at the hinge or hinge side(in contact with hinge).

Gateway uses the same designed shell for 7405GX.
Will it crack ?

I didnt see any design modification when I compared 7405GX, the hinge area specifically, kept beside 2 emachine athlon64 notebook(with cracked hinge) at one of the Bestbuy

Any update ??

Supposedly all of them made on and after August have been repaired. This should include all of the GW machines.

The Question is will it crack ?

The Question is will it crack ?

It may or may not be repaired is a different question ?
BB guys say if the notebook is functional( The crack wont effect the functionality of comp) then they will not replace it.

So whether this kind of situation will exist?
If so how to get out of this ?
Or better dont risk yourself and go for spec which u dont like ?

As far as will it crack noone knows for sure

As far as Best Beuy saying they won't do anything about it, apparently they don't recall replacing all the ones that did crack with brand new shiny machines.

How to get out of it is a) buy another machine b) when it cracks take it back and get it fixed c) send it back to GW and get it fixed.

Will it crack

Does somebody know if any design modification Gateway did on Arima design
(Laptop Case hinge & side)which was failing when used in emachines
post #6 of 24
The cracks was were caused because Arima changed their manufacturing process in March, ending up making the hinges too small (I'll note again this affected every case made not just the emachines onces). This was corrected in July by Arima.

Bottom line it will not crack for the reason the machines with that case made in that time period cracked.

mishra: Thunder_PC already answered your question (as noted above). Gateway is well aware of the hinge problem. I highly doubt they would ignore the loss of revenue incurred by replacement of defective parts and do it all over again. To sum it up: The hinges should be fine now.

But you never really know what the next major manufacturing defect will be.....Brough-Ha-Ha-Ha-Ha.....

The never ending question

.....this cracked hinge issue will likely hang around for a while.

I bought my first lappy two days ago [also 7405GX] & have been overfocused on this issue since. Ive read a dozen threads on the net & have conclude [as Thunder_PC advised] "time will tell".

I think the more important point here is that its the PLASTIC COVER of the hinge area that cracks, not the supporting hinge itself, right? Isnt that why many refer to this issue as a "cosmetic" issue? The actual hinge itself doesnt fail [have any screens ever fallen off unit over this?].

At any rate, I'm sure "cracked hinge" posts will continue for some time.

That is correct. It is just the hinge cover, and does not harm the mechanical portion of hinge itself. It is actually the hinge causing the crack. The covers were made to small and the hinge mechanism is applying pressure to the cover and causing basically a "stress crack".

That is a concise reply on the issue. For me, its enough to kick back on, & enjoy my 7405GX.

Maybe he shouldn't keep the lappy on the radiator!

HAH! I was thinking the exact same thing when I saw the picture. Damn ZeroTolerence...you beat me to the punch like Rocky to Apollo in Rocky II.

ha ha

"Maybe he shouldn't keep the lappy on the radiator!"

That is a radio not a radiator. I placed it there just for better pic lighting.

But think about it.... these GW machines could have been built the same time as the EM ones, with the same parts, just to be released when the EM series ended. Mine states it was manufactured in September. Well that could be relevant or not as that may be when they decided to slap the stickers on and send it to the stores. Just a thought.

Update

Well Gateway went ahead and approved my RMA for the crack, (I kinda thought they would) and the box is on it's way.

My screen seems to be a lot stiffer than I remember any of my m6805s being and that might have been the underlying cause in the crack.

Everybody with one of these 7000 series Gateways keep checking occasionally for cracks as I dont want to send mine off now to be repaired with possibly another hinge from a bad batch. I would rather wait it out and have it fixed for good instead of having to send it in twice.

Thx
Bruce

Sure man, no problem. I'm actually waiting for mine to be shipped to me within the next few days, so I'll keep you posted on what happens after I receive the unit.
