External Audio, Indigo vs. Extigy vs. (the-unknown)

As anyone who has read my signature knows, I am planning on getting a 5680. Also, as almost everyone knows, laptop audio generally sounds like a snake with a mic at an opera.

I have appropriated about $400 more than I had anticipated (was $2500, now about $2900), and am looking into killing that snake with an external audio solution.

Now, here's the million dollar question:

What is more worth it?

Echo Indigo or Sound Blaster Extigy or another external audio solution I don't know about?

Indigo is very portable and very small, yet it doesn't have any ability to record or output to 5.1. 5.1 is not a big deal for me at the moment, however it could be within a year or two.

Extigy has recording and output elements out the wazoo, however it's USB, and (I think) requires external power (if not then that may tip the scales.

But is the extra $40 worth the Extigy over the Indigo?

For mp3's and dvds your best bet would be the echo indigo for sure. The sound quality is quite excelent. However, it really depends on what you plan on using it for.

I say go Indigo...its not too expensive, so in a couple of years if you need to upgrade your audio, it would be feasible to do so.

You would be surprised though....the audio that comes with the Sagers isn't really that bad, especially compared to other notebooks.

I don't know. I'm leaning a little more toward the Extigy because of it's stand-alone capabilites. I'll have a TV and mebbe a DVD player (I think my roommate is bringing them) and we can use the Extigy for that.

I also like the Extigy because it's more able to handle recording and such. I may just end up waiting to see if I like the onboard audio.

The one thing that could possibly decide it, though is...

Can the Extigy be totally USB powered?

If not, are PS/2 Power-Taps enough to power it if I can put my hands on one?

Does anyone even have an Extigy and could bear some remarks about it?

Well, things got a little brighter I was was pricing.

It seems that Echo is going to release the IndigoIO, a stereo input and output pc card. Yay.

An eBay Auction with one
Echo's IndigoIO Site

I may end up going with an Extigy, because I don't mind slightly used parts and it's much cheaper to get it from eBay...
