Asus M6BNe vs Sager 3790

Thread Starter
Today, I received my Asus M6BNe and this is a comparison against the Sager 3790 that I returned a few weeks ago. I was going to post pictures, but most of you know what both notebooks look like.

Build Quality and Cooling
The Sager 3790 has good build quality. The 3790 gets hot, especially on the palm rests and on the touchpad. Also the 3790 fan gets loud about every 5 to 10 minutes and it does not cool the cpu at a decent temperature.

The Asus M6BNe build quality a notch better than the 3790 due to its carbon fiber casing. It does not get hot as the 3790, but it gets just to the point of light warm. The fan is silent, but it gets loud, but not as loud as the 3790.

Sager 3790 = B+
Asus M6BNe = A

Keyboard Feel and Quality
The Sager 3790 keyboard felt flexy. It had more flex than the Dell Inspiron 8600 that I tried out about a month ago, also the 3790 had the Fn key and Ctrl key screwed up. When I pressed the Fn key, it operated the Ctrl function and when I pressed the Ctrl key, it operates the Fn function.

The Asus M6BNe keyboard had a solid feel, but not as good has the HP zt3000 that I tried about two months ago.

Sager 3790 = B+
Asus M6BNe = A-

Looks and Port Arrangements
The Asus MB6Ne is sleek looking and it has excellent port arrangements, but one minor thing that I don't like about it is were the ethernet port and modem port is located. It is located on the left side on the laptop, they should be on the rear of the laptop.

The Sager 3790 looks nice, but the port arrangements are in the wrong place. They are located on the left side and right side of the laptop. The USB ports are upside down.

Sager 3790 = B-
Asus M6BNe = A

Performace, Screen, and Battery Life
The Sager 3790 had excellent peformance due to its GPU. I had the 12 cell battery and battery life was about 4.5 hours. I also had the WSXGA screen and I find it bright, crisp, but the text was too small for me.

The Asus M6BNe also has excellent perfomance, but the gpu is about 4% to 5% slower than the 128 MB 9700 GPU in the 3790. The battery life is about 4.5 hours on the 8 cell battery. I have the WXGA screen and it is bright, crisp, and the text is just the right size for me.

Sager 3790 = A+
Asus M6BNe = A-

Sound Quality
Both laptops have the same audio chip, but different speakers.

The 3790 had tiny sound from the 4 speakers it has, but no bass.

The Asus had better sound from the speakers it has, but it sounded below average and it had a lack of bass.

For better sound buy a good set of headphones such as the Sony MDR-7506 and/or an external sound card such as the Sound Blaster Audigy 2 NX or wait for the Sound Blaster Audigy 2 ZS Notebook.

Sager 3790 = D
Asus M6BNe = D+

Conclusion
The Sager 3790 and the Asus M6BNe are good laptops to their own right. If you want pure gpu peformance, I say get the 3790. If you want a balance of a business notebook and casual to not so hardcore gaming notebook, or if you have a excellent desktop computer to play games in high detail, I say get the Asus M6BNe.

In the end, I ended up with the Asus M6BNe over the Sager 3790, because it met my needs of a laptop.

Nice comparison. However, I feel that in terms of performance, one's take on how the two stack up to each other would differ, according to what the needs/wants of the person comparing them are.

In my case, I would have given the Asus a C or B-, because 64mb compared to the 128mb 9700 is a big difference in games.

A gripe I have is putting performance, screen and battery life into the same category... You're comparing 8 cell to 12 cell, WSXGA+ to WXGA, and 128mb to 64mb all in the same grade... What about the extra weight of the 12 cell battery? Just my thoughts, though it is your comparison...

the 64 meg hasn't been shown to be that far off from the 128. also the mem and gpu in this machine have repeatedly been shown to be easily overclocked when you start to play a game.

It's his comparison and he justifies/gives reasons why he felt each grade was warranted.

You talked about the fan getting loud?1 At full powers (just when it boots up) I cant hear the thing. It seems you got a defective 3790. Secondly your right on the heat, but ive found the issue. Poorly designed. It tries and uncessuflly use the metal plate below the keybaord as a heatsink. Only problem, no air flow, and that started to heat the whole notebook.

The Keyboard flex is very easly solved, just requires some time and effort

could you go a little more in depth about the screen? Like the view angles and which one looked the best, because most of the reviews say the Sager screen is really awesome, so I wondered how its competitor stacks up.
