Possible Bad news for anyone who was planning to upgrade their 800FSB laptops

According to the following links posted below, the current Intel
chipsets "Springdale" & "Canterwood" will not be compatible with
the upcoming P5 Prescott processors.
The new Sagers, along with every other laptop vendor who support 800FSB will be using the "SpringDale" boards.
That means the pentium chips in these systems will not be able to go any higher than 3.2Ghz.
If I recall correctly, Intel's next speed jump to 3.4Ghz and above
will be using the new Prescott P5 processors...
Anatech states that Intel and the motherboard manufacturers may be able to find a workaround, but to "not count on it"

Yeah, that's what I just read. I might hold my laptop purchase to the next year. It seem useless to buy a laptop that can't upgrade to a new Prescott processors.

And thus, another waiting game begins.

That sucks!

Here I was all happy that this laptop 5680 would be all powerful and infinite upgrades...Sheez Eh. I guess ya got to take the bad with the good..

do you think the 8890 sager chasis will fit the prescott based motherboards if we were to upgrade down the road?

Wheehw...now I'm glad I bit the bullet and went with a centrino solution, there is more of an upgrade path plus I get the battery life.

That sucks. I guess I gotaa get something i'll be happy with for a while. Forget buying these laptops for now, I have a nice one right now that I can live with. =/

Man you "waiters" (vs haters) are never gonna get a laptop!!! Just bite the bullet and get a sager. Why wait till next year??? Then, when the new ones come out there will be another snag... its a never ending cycle. I got my 5670 about a month ago and I have no regrets. I see the new models coming out and while Im impressed, I dont think I would have got one of those anyway. Hope this doesnt sound like a flame... I was just surprised by some of the posts!

i seem to recall there will be some early .90 p4 with pin compatibility up to 3.6-4 g.
realistically, you never get more than a year of upgrades without a new mb/chipset.
So wait.. If 865 875 does not support the new upcoming Prescott processor what chipset / motherboard does? Since the next big change is a new 700pin + socket. Is Intel really going to release a 478pin CPU that no chipset/motherboard can use?

"Before Prescott undergoes a complete socket overhaul in Q2 2004, all Prescott processors will be of the Socket 478 variety, shipments of which will start in early Q4 of this year"

This means a whole 2Q bubble time that no MB / Chipset will work... wow this rumor must be true.

Ahem.. http://www.overclockers.com/tips00424/

Knowing sager they more than likely use the appropriate compatible boards

LOL

Well anyway not more waiting for me. Screw the new proccessors, future upgrades and whatnot. As soon as the 4760 is released with the M10 Pro, Adam and PC Torque will get my bucks (well, euros in my case).

Cheers.

Actually I'm not hurry to get a new laptop anyway. My 17" Apple is still powerful enough to do any tasks I ever want. I will wait and see if new AMD Athlon 64 laptop or new laptop than can upgrade to new Intel Prescott processors (with enhance HT). It seem to be a waste to buy a new laptop and can't upgrade to the newer CPU over 3.2GHz..... Just my opinion.

true kasteo, I mean you cant upgrade like a tower

spending over $2000 on a laptop that you cant upgrade the cpu is rediculous

Waiting another nine months isn't going to help much.

That's one of the things about buying a laptop: you sacrifice mucho upgradability for mobility and petiteness. That's why you get something as expensive and as powerful as you can afford: a Sager. As long as nothing changes too much, I'm sure Sager or some company will figure out how to upgrade our 5680s and 8890s. If not, then we'll still have something that will kick ass compared to the majority of computers. If you're one who wants to have 300 MHz of clock speed and mebbe 200 MHz of FSB speed above the rest of us, then perhaps you should wait.

My 3.0 GHz (or 3.2 GHz, for that matter) will still play every game, run every program available today, and for the next year or two. Only then will it begin to become 'older'.

If you want to brag about benchmarks and don't have to have the laptop now, wait nine months. If you want to brag about benchmarks now, and need the laptop now, and are ok with something that isn't the fastest piece of silicon on Earth, wait three weeks.

You have a good point. Actually since I don't game very much on my computers, both my dual-processor p3-500 desktop machine and my p3-450 laptop still serve me well today. Sure I can go for a couple rounds of Quake 3 on my desktop in a medium resolution with all the detail, but I'd rather get the best I can afford. Back in August of 1998, I purchased that p3-500 with two 10,000 rpm Ultra2-wide scsi hard drives. Even to this day, those drives smoke everything available on the market (other than the 15k rpm drives). So I guess I just wanted to have the best right now so I don't upgrade for another 4 years or so.

The waiting game is a never ending circle in the technology industry. As long as you choose your purchasing moment smartly (like now with the releasing of the new M10 pro, 800 FSB with a 3.06 Ghz HT), that technology will serve you very well for the next 3 years. Hell, my AMD K7 700 Mhz with a Gforce2 has lasted that long and has been kicking all this walk thru.

I have my mind pretty much made up my mind. I will buy my laptop as soon as these new specs we all been waiting for hits the market. And I sure gonna enjoy it for the next 3 years

Cheers.
