Dell Inspiron 8600 and 600m Life Extended -- No Inspiron 8700 Anytime Soon - Article

Thread Starter
Folks, saw this today, passing it along - seems counter to what we saw with dell having contracted out prodcution of some more new laptops (someones prior posting here) Maybe just production delays?

I have vested interest as waiting for either discounted dell (no such us savings in canada yet, or jumping ship for the attractive gateway rewrapped emachine)

Dell Inspiron 8600 and 600m Life Extended -- No Inspiron 8700 Anytime Soon

According to Dell sources, the Inspiron 8600 and Inspiron 600m will continue production into Spring of 2005. Often Dell updates its 8000 series of notebooks, which is its most popular selling, on a yearly basis. However, due to popularity of the current 8600 the lifetime has been extended and there will be no Inspiron 8700 anytime soon. The Inspiron 600m was supposed to be replaced by the release of the Inspiron 700m, but due to continuing popular sales of the 600m its production has also been extended into Spring of 2005.

Bringing this back from the grave, especially since I plan to purchase a Dell notebook either late December or wait until late February. Dell currently covers almost the entire spectrum of notebook products, excluding the tablet. With the introduction of Sonoma/Alviso in January, Dell will certainly have to replace some existing models. I'm still waiting to hear about the Latitude D610, and I don't see Dell introducing another form factor for the chipset alongside the Dothan models. If Dell adopts Sonoma early, they're likely to put it into a new chassis and brand it with a new model number. Another thought--will Intel continue to develop Dothan after Sonoma's release? I doubt it.

I'm not suprised why the i8000 range is the best selling. I sure am glad that they plan to keep the 8600 for a bit longer, I purchased one just last week.

A similar article was posted before... though this one is slightly misleading by its comment that the 600m was to be phased out by the production of the 700m. The 700m is not a successor to the 600m.

But it's good to bring back the idea... lower prices may be in store in the next few months for the 8600 and 600m.

they should at least up the RAM speed on the 600m to PC2700

I'm also happy to see them not get rid of the 600m yet. It is definitely not the predecessor of the 700m. When I was choosing between the 600m and 700m, I decided on the 600m because of the stronger video card and full size keys.

Upgrading the RAM speed on the 600m would be sweet though.

This has to be the first time that I've purchased a computer (i8600) and it wasn't obsolete within 3 months.

From what I've gathered about the new iXPS Gen2, it will have a 17-in screen and a Pentium M, and it's coming out in time for christmas shoppers. That means it's either an i9200 with a mobility radeon 9800, or an Alviso notebook. If it's the latter, I'm all over it, otherwise I'll be looking elsewhere for Alviso and other PCI-Express notebooks.

what, no more P4 HT CPUs on laptops anymore for dell then?

The 600m couldn't be replaced by the 700m... maybe the 500m could be as they both had the Intel Extreme Graphics. The 600m replacement would be a 5lb notebook with a Radeon 9600-9800 Mobile. That's the only spot of the notebook that need upgrading.

Nope. Plain and simple. at least as related to P-M.

Well, they do...........sort of. My unit (2 months old) shipped w/ 2 x 256mb of pc2700 ram. (Hynix) Only problem is that even though mine's a Dothan 1.5M it still only runs at 400mhz (100 x 4).

Even when they jump to 533mhz fsb on the new P-M, they'd only need pc2100.

And as for higher speeds and better graphics in these things?? The 600m barely has enough room to keep from catching fire with the components it has in it now. Go to 533fsb and throw in a 9700 GPU and you'll be able to iron your clothes with it when not using it as a computer!

NO BULL!!!!!!!!!!!

yes dell ships pc2700 (333 Mhz) with 600m, but it only runs at pc2100 (266 Mhz)

I got my speeds right? PC3200 is 400 Mhz the ones in the 9100?
Yes, pc3200 runs 200mhz(800-effective). (200xquad clock)

And, to be honest, I haven't really looked at my 600m's bios for the memory speed. I can only assume you're right, but to be honest, it really doesn't have to run any faster than pc1600 since it's only a 100x4 fsb system. Don't ask me what pc2700 is truly for since nobody ever really created a 667fsb system. (OK, well overclocking...... )

Basically, I we're seeing some systems ship with pc2700 right now only 'cuz it's cheaper ram than 2100 or 3200. Now........as for my Geil Golden DRagon pc3500.........
