Other then the two mentioned above...all Sager default drivers/applications.

Games Commonly Played:
TFC
World Of Warcraft

BF1942
BF1942 DC Mod
BFVietnam
BF POE Mod
Farcry
Doom3

*The ordering process was easy and fast. I payed with CC in order to have some addtional security through my credit card company.
*I ordered on a Friday and received the computer professionally packed and the box in good shape on the following Wed.
*RMA'ed the computer for bad pixels within the center area of the # matrix. It took about 72 hours which was a bit longer then they guarentee during the first 30 days but it was still fast and most important it was fixed correctly (new screen). Side note: Consumers should not have to pay for shipping back to Sager if the RMA reason was not consumer caused. This one policy alone I believe is a weight slowing the internet sales industry.

Being a big gamer I noticed immediately I did not give myself enough HD space. My desktop has 2 60 gig HD's and 2 36 gig HD's. Adjusting to 1 60 gig is rough. If you are already dropping this much $ on a Sager get the addtional drive space.

I have experienced ZERO problems (minus the RMA'ed screen). No random crashes no funny quarks etc. Everything I throw at this computer is handled. In my signature below you can see my desktop stats. I can say I honestly do not notice any performance difference in the two when playing games like WoW and Doom3.

Biggest concerns for me:
HD Space, Heat on the left wrist pad (although not excessive it is slightly annoying in a hot climate). Fan noise is more then I expected but that was due to unrealistic expectations. My Desktop is easily twice as loud as this laptop. I mentioned the fan noise only because I think it > COULD < be too loud in a class room enviornment depending on the temp and apps being ran.

Overall Satisfaction: This is my first laptop. I am use to high performance from desktops and this was bought as a Desk Top Replacement. It has turned out to be a perfect fit for me. All expectations have been met and I would buy it all over again (cept next time it will be PCIE & a larger HD).

OVERCLOCKING
I am running XP Pro SP2
Radeon Omega Drivers 2.5.90 (Catalyst 4.10 Beta)
Power Strip

Using Aqua3 @ 1024x768
415/280 = 28,284
460/290 = 30,759
500/300 = 32,895
515/300 = 33,621

For Comparison my desktop (specs are in signature) was recently formatted so it has no tweaks and only stock drivers & apps installed.

Using Aqua3 @ 1024x768
Stock = 42,999

How do my laptop numbers look? In comparison to Adams I am running a little bit faster but thats likely the Omega drivers I have installed.

NOTE: I have not stressed my computer heavily during any of the overclocking settings. I plan to play World Of Warcraft for few hours today at 500/300. If I notice problems I will give a follow up post.

Dak, nice short and honest review. Thanks for the mention - even though I didn't contribute too much. Might consider another 60GB HDD and Raid 0, it does make a difference. Keep in touch.

Does PcTorque's 8790-C come with this processor, or is this the S Version?

I think it's the same one just 3.0 vs 3.4

Gomaha- I've been considering buying a second 60 gig HD. Whats the best way to identify exactly what I already have without pulling the drive? The descriptions in my hardware profiles are vague. It looks like a Hitachi? I've ran a google search on the numbers I can find and I dont think I have the right piece of info yet.
its most likely the hitachi 60 gig 7200 rpm deive that u are looking for, cause that sounds like what u already have.
The ones I have are the Hitachi 60GB 7,200rpm drives. They can now be found a5 a variety of sources - try a google search (it may save you a buck or two).

The 3.4 CPU and 1GB memory upgrade essentially makes it an 8790-S.

Update

I've noticed one problem since this post. After installing power strip (not overclocked) I've noticed when "waking" the computer from standby mode at times there are small squares about 1cm all over the screen. A light blue type color if I am not mistaken.

Has anyone seen this before or after power strip use regardless of clock settings?

If you're looking for a drive, you might want to try Newegg.com if you haven't already. Very reputable site and good prices, to boot.

If you want information about your computer, you might want to try installing Everest or Belarc Advisor. I don't have links for them right now, but Google can get you going (or looking at the thread for 8790 apps).

I am looking at getting the same laptop you have and i was wondering how it handles Doom3? what settings are you running at and whats your average FPS?
Also if you or anyone with the same sys or similar specs that plays Counter Strike Source i'm also wondering how that runs and what fps?

Thanks
Hedrox
*bump* please i'm really curious on what these fps are, and would like to know b4 I order, (don't wanna get something i'm not happy with) thanks
post #15 of 16
my 8790 is similar, just has a 3.2 p4 instead of a 3.4 p4, i run doom 3 at 1024x768 at high settings with shadows on, AA off, and i average around 30FPS, sometimes gets up near the 60's, and sometimes dips down to 20-25 fps
