My display driver is screwed!

Ok I'll try to make this long story short.

I have a np8790-v with the 256meg ATI 9700 vid card

I was using the Omega 2.5.44's because those were the only ones that would allow me to play movies on my lappie.

Finally decided to upgrade the bios to 1.00.10 so I could try the new omega's that supposible did'nt have the playback problem.

Flash went out a hitch and everything seemed to work fine until I tried to update the vid drivers. Followed the directions given but when I rebooted ...nothing...I mean no driver installed. I re-installed...nothing...un-installed and re-installed...nothing...I re-installed the AGP chipset drivers...nothing...I re-installed the 2.5.44's... nothing...but then I started getting errors...."radlinker unable to install could not find needed file..." and then it would get stuck in a loop of trying to install and then post the error message and once you hit ok it would try to install again....and then I would get an error re-installing the "standard VGA" driver (could not find the file...)...now I'm writting to you at 600x400 res...this sucks...

...so does anyone have a suggestion or should I give in and re-format/re-install ?

That is what happened to me (the first part about no driver showing). I think* I went into the start menu and ran the link the ati driver put in there to get the final part of the installation done. Although, some of those errors sound pretty rough, try looking for something in the start menu to run (or maybe even if there is an install directory for the drivers) .

(*think meaning, can't remember...)

This might not be much help but...

Firus, thanks for the reply.....I tried everything even remotely related posted in other threads/forums...unfortunately, nothing worked. I toyed with the idea of "repairing windows" but I thought screw that I'll just re-install fresh. So far so good. I have the omega 2.5.90's installed with no errors...yet...

Waldo, did you thoruoughly uninstall the .44s, using the method described in the Radeon Omega Driver Cleaner Readme? I copy and pasted from the readme doc with the Omegas:
Quote:
Driver Cleaner Omega 1.1
Copyright (c) 2003-2004 Ruud Ketelaars.
All Rights Reserved.

It works on all windows operating systems.

Full Uninstall Instructions:

1. Uninstall the "ATI Display Drivers (Omega x.xx.xx)" from Windows Control Pane|Add/Remove Programs.

2. Restart the PC in SAFE MODE. (Keep pressing F8 before the Windows boot screen appears)

3. Run Driver Cleaner Omega Edition and click start to remove the remaining files and registry entries.

4. Run "Uninstall Omega Drivers Setup Files" from the Start Menu.

5. Restart and just install any driver you want.
If you did that, I am befuddled, but that could be the source of the problem. If the drivers are not properly uninstalled prior to another driver installation, bad things happen apparently. I dont know how to fix it though. Sorry
