i have a 8600 with wxga+ and ati 9600.

my dvd's playback slightly fuzzy (using gladiator), kinda grainy ish. i thought it would look superb , almost hdtv like.

so is the graininess what everyone sees?

very slight though. anyone know if my settings are off?

I've never seen HDTV type quality watching a dvd movie on ANY pc, much less a laptop.

I've got the WSXGA display and my dvd playback is ok. Doens't look any different than what I see on my pc. I do like the wide screen for the movies!

Because of the expansion to fullscreen and such (not native DVD resolution) there will of course be some fuzziness/ graininess. Just sit back from the screen a bit and it will be unnoticeable

i noticed the same.. then put it 5 feet away and it letter better. still not as good as im used to on the CRT monitor.. i figure that maybe it's less clear since we got widescreens (well, i used a divx... so if the screen is more wider i'll probably lose more quality)

i'm not quite following you guys exactly... i thought these dvds were made for widescreen? the dvds i have are widescreen. shouldn't this make the image perfect on our 15.4?

no, DVD widescreen aspect ratio is 16:9. Dell's widescreen aspect ratio is 16:10.

so we get small bars on the top and bottom if maximized? why would this create fuzziness though. thanks. just trying to learn something new.

Its fuzzy because the resolution of the DVD video is no where near the resolution of your screen. Hence the fuzziness.
