hi. this is my case...

i have a inspiron 8600 with 7200 rpm hard drive. dell is sending a replacement laptop because mine is messed up. exact same configuration. could i just pop the old hard drive out and put it in the new one and have it work like nothing happened?

the current hard drive already has windows XP on it.

Yes.

No. The above user is correct in that the HD will work fine, but you will probably have to reinstall windows or at the least drivers and such because all the associations might not carry over correctly, it may come across problems and the feared BSOD. So if you wanna try a straight swap, at the very least uninstall all of the drivers before swapping them, then swap over, and install the drivers once more on the new machine, kapish?

you will only need to reinstall the drivers "the blue CD"

I've swapped my HD from a 2650 -> 1150 -> 5100 -> 5150 -> 600m -> 700m

however the bad part is that your unused drivers are still on your hard drive taking up space. So if you have time and a place to backup your files do a clean install.

If it has the exact same components, shouldn't the installed drivers be fine?

No, because the windows associations we made with the other components in the other laptop. Some would be fine, but there is the potential for most to not work correctly.... trust me, I have done this many times

Oh, I believe you. I just had the preconceived notion that everything would work correctly if it had the exact same components. I stand corrected.

I think it's fine.....I had a ghost image that I created back when I had the original i8600. I tried to extract that image to my new i8600c(basically just like a hdd swapping), the only drivers I found that the winxp re-detected and re-installed itself were hdd(because the hdd was different brand and partition table was different too), wlan, & lan (This is obvious because all WLAN/LAN cards have different MAC addresses).
