Search c:\Windows\System and subdirectories (or even the whole C, may be in root on some) drive for the "hosts" file. Open it in notepad. At the bottom you should only have one entry.
127.0.0.1 localhost
any others, delete. You will probably see FTP IP you are having problems with. Delete them and save the file. If this doesn't have entrys, check other hosts files like lmhosts and such. They should show up on the search.

Example good file:
# Copyright (c) 1993-1999 Microsoft Corp.
#
# This is a sample HOSTS file used by Microsoft TCP/IP for Windows.
#
# This file contains the mappings of IP addresses to host names. Each
# entry should be kept on an individual line. The IP address should
# be placed in the first column followed by the corresponding host name.
# The IP address and the host name should be separated by at least one
# space.
#
# Additionally, comments (such as these) may be inserted on individual
# lines or following the machine name denoted by a '#' symbol.
#
# For example:
#
# 102.54.94.97 rhino.acme.com # source server
# 38.25.63.10 x.acme.com # x client host

127.0.0.1 localhost

---------------
reboot after you save.

If this isn't the problem, you may have your firewall set up to either block FTP sites, or have web filtering turned on to do the same.

thanks for the response. I checked those hosts files and all were similar to what you copied. No extra IP's were present so i guess thats not the problem. because it was sudden, im thinking somthing might have gotten blocked on a spyware update(i have spyware blaster which blocks certain pages or spyware) but even when i turn that off i still cant get in. I even just tried adding the site to the trusted sites under internet options. I dont know what web filtering is though. Any ohter ideas?? Thanks for your help. I also have PC anywher installed, could that be causing problems??

I doubt PC anywhere is the problem by just being installed. Is that what you are using to connect with? If it is, it could be a settings issue with PC Anywhere. Web filtering is a part of some firewalls (ZoneAlarm for example) that will block certain site types or type of programs, from access so that children and such cannot get on, it usually comes enabled, and you have to disable it on the firewall. If you are using a software firewall, make sure the site is not blocked.

What are you using to connect? Try just IE or a browser, just to make sure you do not have a settings issue with a program.

edit 1 - one other thought, I'm sure how good the friend is, but he could be blocking your IP as either a joke, or on purpose.

I only mentioned that to help diagnose the connection issue, not to recommend IE a good method for FTP Purposes. PC Anywhere can be a little finicky on the settings and I just wanted to see if he could get on the site through other means. Personally, I find FlashFXP to be a little better than WS_FTP, although I use both.

Thanks again for the replies. Ive tried on both IE and firefox, and neither will work. My friend is not blocking my IP, hes like my best friend, im just 3 hours away from him, otherwise id just go get the stuff myself, he cant figure it out either, because pretty much any computer I try from gets in. The only firewall I have on is the SP1 windows firewall so i dont think thats the problem. Ill try those other programs and see, but i dont know very much about them or FTP's for that matter. Seems easier to just use IE, whats the advantage of those programs?? And Im not using pc anywhere to get in, the problems ive been having are with IE.

Their quicker and easier to use. They work more like a Windows Explorer format, so you can just drag and drop and you can save the format. Although, unless there is a password issue IE should work fine, so I don't think they will fix your problem. Actually, PC Anywhere has the same capability, as it has built in FTP Functionality, but it is a little tricky to setup sometimes. You could try a 30 Day Trial of FlashFXP or WS_FTP and see what you think. At this point, it might be worth your while, as IE is not always completely dependable on FTP Sites. Outside of that, I am out of other options. Maybe someone else will have some thoughts on this.

http://www.flashfxp.com/home.php
http://www.wsftp.com/Products/file-transfer.html

If it works on either of these, it means you have some kind of setup issue with IE

Nice, the flash ftp worked in seconds. Still like to know whats wrong with the IE, but thanks a bunch.

Not a problem, good to hear it is working. Probably a settings issue in IE. If you click on Tools>Internet Options>Advanced Tab, you may find the problem, off hand, I would make sure the "Enable FTP folder View" (7th down under browsing is checked, you could also select restore defaults.

After using a decent FTP Program like FlashFXP or WSFtp, you will probably never want to go back.
