HELP! I'm infested with Viruses!!!

Here is the thing, before getting this laptop, I had a HP computer where they included a restore disc that allowed reformatting back to factory settings and wiping clean the hard drive. But this new cl56 I have is different. I tried reinstallng Windows, and did, but I found I still had old files on my computer. I downloaded a virus program and it found a ton. So, I figured I'd delete the viruses, which I did, then reinstall windows, but the viruses popped up again. And I hadn't yet gone on the net. Is there any way I can wipe clean this hard drive and start over. For some reason I can't lose old files, even when I choose to install windows over other windows. What gives?

Its all about which virus program you use... which are you using?

I like- avg at www.grisoft.com , they have a free version, works great- and hosuecall.trendmicro.com is an awesome online one, useful for stubborn trojan downloaders.

I have never been fond of realoding the OS. Seems to me like pulling an engine out of a car for pinging... instead of fixing the problem. Of course, it depends on your level of infestation too.

Good luck

You have to reformat and install, no just a simple re-install on top of existing program.

I'll go by the assumption you are using XP. Boot using the XP disk in the drive, select boot from CD. This will take you to the setup. Right after you create the partition it will ask if you want to format. If you are not using XP and this does not work post what you are using.

It asks if you want to REPAIR or REINSTALL - choose reinstall, and then format the HD's, etc. Tons of info on this everywhere (Google is your friend).

Uh... just incase you don't know yet. If you format you'll lose all the information on the harddrive partition your are formatting. So back up your important files first to cd or external drive.

After you reinstall XP and virus scanner, scan your back up files for viruses first before loading them back to your computer. Sorry i'm if typing the blatently obvious, maybe i'm just reading into your handle too much.
