Need an HONEST overall opinon on the Dell 700m

Thread Starter
I just placed an order for a Dell 700m. Here are the specs as follows:

Intel® Pentium® M Processor 755(2.0GHz/400MHz FSB) 12.1-in WXGA
1GB DDR SDRAM 2 Dimms
60GB Hard Drive 7200 RPM
Microsoft® Windows® XP Professional
8x CD/DVD burner (DVD+/-RW) with double-layer write capability
Dell® Wireless 1450 Internal Wireless (802.11a/b/g, 54Mbps
65 WHr 8-cell Lithium Ion Primary Battery

Total Price SHIPPED: $1745.54

1. How is the monitor on this 700m? Overall clarity, etc, etc.???
2. How fast should I expect for this laptop to be, overall?
3. And just an overall opinion on these specs and the laptop itself in general

Thank you for your kind feedback

Here you go

My order was shipped on 10/25 and I received my 700m on 10/26. I ordered during the $750 off period (10/19) so I was able to get a respectably configured machine for $741.

The monitor is probably the best I've ever seen on a laptop. I've used various laptops including a Sony with XBright technology and this one is slightly brighter with an very crisp image. One qualm I have is with integrated graphics chip software which won't allow you to adjust the gamma below 1.0. This makes the colors look slightly washed out.

My device came with a 1.6Ghz Pentium M and it is more than snappy. Comparatively, it is noticeably faster than my laptop with a Mobile Athlon XP 2000+. It also breezes through some CPU intensive chess software that I have. I can see you ordered the 2.0Ghz CPU so your performance should be even better.

I see you also ordered the 8-cell battery which I also received. With the brightness of the LCD down and the CPU running minimally, the battery lasted around 6 hours +-. I haven't tested it with the brightest screen setting and the CPU at full load.

Hope you enjoy your machine. For $741, I couldn't get a better machine anywhere else.

Tonisama said it well. I have been extremely happy with my 700m. Great screen, snappy performance.

$750 off? WoW!!!!! Hopefully I get my money's worth!!!! Thanks for the awesome feedback. I will update when I receive mines.

BTW, since I got the 8 cell battery, does it stick out more? Is it noticeably bigger? etc. etc.

shoot, don't waste $2,400 on one laptop, get 2 laptops or a sweet laptop and a desktop. over the summer i spent over $2,000 on the first laptop in my sig, and yeah it was cool when i first bought it but, i'd rather have a portable laptop and a desktop, so i sold that laptop and bought a 700m for $757 and a dimension 3000 with HT and 17inch flat panel and still got some cash back........
