I just got the laptop yesterday and it will only play DVD's and cd audio. I tried putting in the Unreal Tournament install disc and it just keeps making a clicking sound without doing anything. Anybody know a solution or is it simply defective? If it's defective can i just call Dell up and have them ship me a new cd drive and i return this one back? Thanks for your help...BTW this sucks as I wanted to try out some games on this badboy

Did you try any other game disks yet? I noticed when I installed Doom 3 when my Xps first got here ( I have the same drive as you) that it wouldn`t open to allow the next install disk to be inserted without using a paperclip in the manual release hole. It did this 3 more times over the next 2 days. I came home from work the 3rd day and did a format using XP home service pack 1 and the problem is now gone.

I have the same issue with my DVD+RW drive. Could you tell me what model drive you have by going to your Device Manager. I have the Sony DW-R56A 8X CD-RW/DVD+RW drive. I'm unable to read any CD-ROM media, only DVD-ROM media. Kind've a strange issue. I'm starting to think this is an issue for a bunch of people. Currently, there are no firmware or software updates that will fix this.

well i finally got in touch with tech support on the phone...40 min wait just to talk to them!! Specialized support for XPS owners my ass. Well i described to him the problem and well it didn't really help however i disabled all my startup items from and non-MS items from the services tab in msconfig. Oddly enough i was able to install UT2004 afterwards and it only gave me a problem once on the first install cd. After that everything went smoothly. I guess we just have to deal with the problem. I have the Sony model as well. Only happens with regular cd's once in a while though. Audio+DVD's work perfectly fine all the time now. I alos had problems ejecting before but it seems to be fine now. It might have to do with the service pack 2 but disabling all of those items did help out a bit. Hopefully some software or something comes out to fix this problem

Xplosive412: Are you able to boot up with a WinXP disc at all because I can't even boot up to one. So my problem occurs even outside of the Windows environment.
