that no "company" reviewed sager laptops!

Great find i'm about half way through reading it now. It just kind of pisses me off that all the Sager reviews i've found powernotebooks is considerd the primary reseller. But hey they were willing to lend/give them the laptop so more power to them.

Basically, it sounds just like a 5660 review that someone posted a link to a while back... same phrasing in each paragraph - only updated the tech parts.

I wonder if they just borrowed the old review or got it with the notebook from powernotebooks... I'd like to see a REAL review, but that only happens in forums; all the others are usually bogus (the reviewer gets a free machine, kickback, or something, etc)

most likely, i have read nomerous reviews about a lot of things (mobility radeon 9000 for example) and they all seem to say the SAME THING. it is like one person does the review and the other 50-99999 people just paraphrase it...

...and I wouldn't be surprised if that original someone worked for the company making the product being reviewed...

No, No, Say It Ain't So Joe!

How could you think such a thing. I mean, what you suggest is simply monstrous. For an employee to conceal his relationship with his employers and author a review that was not honest and accurate is beyond the imagination. How could an employer countenance such a thing, and yet, you suggest said employer might not have just allowed this but perhaps even rewarded the employee with money, perhaps stock options, maybe even sex.

All I can say is pffftt!

That's because powernotebooks endorses the reviews you have seen just as Dell endorses reviews in PC Magazine. Most review places that are endorsed try and give positive reviews (and of course promote the company) so they can get the next laptop released to review also from them. That's why I think the review section here is as powerful and honest as they come. These are people that own them because they PURCHASED them and are giving honest opinions that don't affect any rewards or penelties in their future.

That's why I say take many of the magazine reviews and some of the website review sites with a grain of salt because the supplier is who is likely supporting the reviews (A.K.A. "BOSS").

why do you folks think that maximumpc magazine completely ignores sager notebooks? they even stated that the dell inspiron 8500 was the most powerful portable money could buy(which prompted my order of that system, later cancelled when i discovered sager)....even though clevo based alienware systems spends countless $$$$ advertising the back cover of each isssue. i am missing the logic here....maybe there is none to be found.

Logic? What Logic? We don't need no stinking Logic!!

I think you just managed to hit the head of the nail with the head of the hammer! There is no logic, other than that dictated by the flow of cash. Magazines, Newspapers, even Books now, are just advertising platforms. Their purpose is to get you to send your cash somewhere, whatever it takes. Virtually all material in such platforms is advertising, one way or the other. Its pretty much standard operating procedure to run Infomercial articles along with hard advertising in the same area or if they are more sophisticated, elsewhere in the publication. The reason Sager rarely gets reviews is they don't play the game. They don't send a couple dozen machines to this rag's staff or that one's. They don't wine and dine, they don't party hearty, they don't jetset junket, they just sell laptop computers. Ask anybody who's been to their "world headquarters", in the City of Industry. Right there you get the message, its a standard industrial warehouse/plant. So there's not much reason for the various publications to tout them.

The last few months have been a real wakeup call, and the last WEEK has been a real slap in the face for this geek whose been at it since 1978.

The entire hardware industry, with the exception of maybe 1%, is a whore-house of lies, mistruth, halftruths, conjecture, falsity, and buyoffs.

Dell is a SCAM. CNET is a SCAM. The list goes on and on.

Its all well and good, until you need to buy something.

How I found my way to Sager and this forum I cant even remember now - random link that came up searching google for 'most reliable laptop' i think.

I happen to love MaximumPC and think its the best most informative mag, along with CPU, available - but it burns me up that their reviews are bought and paid for - and account to nothing but lies.

Clevo has been making top notch machines for 20 years, and only about 5% of the power geeks even know who they are.

Its a real travesty whats happened to the industry. Im just glad I found my way here, and did my homework enough to finally get something that used to exist in this industry in the 80s and even the early 90s - but today, is all but dead:

TRUTH.

I do completly agree with both you and myrkat that the best (and most trustworthy) reviews are WITHOUT A DOUBT found in forms such as this one, which is undoubtably the most honest and most flame free form i've seen to date. What i was trying to say however is that i wish some of the articles would mention www.PCtorque.com as one of the resellers. Especially considering a PERECT 10.00 rating on www.resellerratings.com which is no easy task (granted www.powernotebooks.com is right behind in 6th place with a 9.98).

And i also wish Sager was more well known. In the computer class i'm takin several people were striving to get the alienware area 51-m laptop. Naturally upon hearing this i turned into the hulk and went on a rampage to inform everyone about Sager and PCtorque Also from what i've read here it seems that one of the main ways people find out about sager is ironially from doing research on alienware...thus making them the best advertisment for Sager
post #13 of 17
Yeah but that is going to change soon because Alienware is not going to use Clevo anymore...Thereby eliminating the Sager Alienware connection.

Word-of-mouth advertising is still the most trusted and most desirable form of advertising. Granted, one may not pull in the big numbers from the uneducated masses, but nothing beats a good reputation and solid performance history that is conveyed from one person directly to another.

I know my boss (a huge IBM-Thinkpad-only guy) will be getting a Sager when his current IBM starts feeling old (probably in 2-3 years, but hey...).

This is one area where I get a bit confused about CNET, a site I slammed perhaps a bit too hard. I do think their reviews are bought out by the big boys, but the reader reviews are very helpful - although sometimes I even wonder about them.

Its a bit weird to see CNET give a stellar rating to a machine then have only 60% of users give it favorable reviews.

That said, CNET has great news, and download.com is a fantastic source of material.

Oh please... Slashdot and Sourceforge are even better....
